Lavender Brown. Her blond hair curls at the edges, as if she tried to straighten it but gave up when she reached the tips. Seamus shouldn't have thought up a reason for this and yet he has. He notices when she switches her lip gloss to a lighter shade of pink. He notices when she borrows Parvarti's eyeshadow because it is lighter than what she normally wears. Seamus shouldn't know any of these things, but he can't help himself.

He sits behind her in Transfiguration. This explains his terrible performance. He picks a seat close but not too close to hers in the Great Hall. While his friends talk about their classes, he leans and tries to overhear Lavender's conversations. He knows he is bordering on obsessive. He knows it but can't help himself.

"Just ask her to the Yule Ball already," Dean says, annoyed. Seamus rushes to shush his best friend.

"Don't let her hear you!" he says, looking around the table hastily. He sees Lee suppressing a smirk but no one else seems to have noticed Dean's outburst.

"The worst she can do is say no," Dean points out.

"No," Seamus insists. "The worst she can do is laugh in my face."

"Okay but that still isn't that bad."

Seamus doesn't dignify that with a response. He eats the rest of lunch in silent brooding. Dean knows damn well that Lavender would never go to the Yule Ball with someone like him. He watches as she vacates the table, straight hair falling over her shoulders as she leans to whisper in Parvarti's ear. She laughs, a soft pretty-girl laugh with a hand over her mouth and both girls glance at him quickly. Seamus chokes on his juice and Neville, sitting next to him, harshly raps on his back.

"You okay?" Neville asks, concerned.

"Yeah," Seamus manages, shaking his head swiftly to clear it. "Just thought I saw something..." He trails off, watching the two girls leave the Great Hall. As if Lavender would give him the time of day.

After lunch is Defense Against the Dark Arts. Professor Moody is so frightening that Seamus actually pays attention. The professor's wild blue eye always seems to rest on him, but Seamus knows that every student feels this way. He is beginning to doubt Moody can even see out of the thing and just uses it to intimidate. Either way, it certainly does the job and Seamus doesn't think about Lavender for the whole period. It is only when they are dismissed and he heads out of the classroom that he remembers to think about Lavender and a date to the Yule Ball. He sees her standing a few feet from the classroom door and Dean not so subtly pushes his friend towards her. Seamus trips over his feet on the way and leans not so gracefully against the stone wall.

"Hey," he says as conversationally as he can. Parvarti giggles behind her hand and Lavender smiles sweetly. Seamus forgets his words, his tongue sticks to his teeth and he can't say much else besides. "Erm." He looks down, cheeks flushing with embarrassment and quickly walks passed the two girls.

The Common Room at least provides him some peace -- if peace is Dean digging in about his red cheeks and stammering. Not like Dean has a date, anyway. Nor does Neville but at least Neville has the decency to be quiet about it. Seamus also knows for certain that both Harry and Ron have been scrambling for dates -- though Harry should have it easy with being a champion, among other things. This is getting ridiculous, of course. They are running out of time and if they don't act soon, they'll all be going without dates. Seamus is pretty certain Lavender already has a date anyway, but that doesn't mean he can't fantasize about it.

He catches her eye across the Common Room. She sits at the table by the window, parchment and books spread between her and Parvarti and he thinks they are are working on Divination homework. She smiles her sweet smile, where her lips stay closed but he can see a bit of her front teeth, then looks back at the table. Seamus feels his cheeks burn again. Maybe he will ask her to the Yule Ball. Maybe she will say yes. Maybe they will descend the great staircase into the Great Hall and everyone will be jealous. Maybe they will dance and Seamus will feel her warm skin beneath her robes and press a kiss to her cheek at the end of the night. Maybe...

"Hey!" Dean all but shouts, rousing Seamus from his daydream. "Are you going to help with this Potions work or not?"

"Sorry," he says quietly, looking back at the parchment in front of him. "You're right. We should get this done tonight."

They spend the next three hours working on their essay for Snape. He sees Lavender retreat into the girls dormitory -- another missed opportunity.

He wakes late in the morning. The dorm is empty and he curses Dean under his breath for not waking him. He dresses hastily, thinking he may miss the entirety of breakfast if he doesn't hurry. Still pulling on his shoes, he runs down the stairs to the main part of the Common Room. There are a few people scattered about, those who skipped breakfast or ate earlier. As he laces up his sneaker, he catches a glimpse of Lavender as she exits through the portrait hole so he speeds up to catch her. He thinks maybe he'll just say good morning and perhaps they could walk to breakfast together -- if that is where she is going. He jumps out of the hole and almost runs into her because she hasn't gone anywhere. She is standing there as if waiting for him.

"Seamus," she says, more direct than she has every spoken to him before.

"Erm, Lavender?" he asks, unsure of what is about to happen.

"Are you going to ask me to the Yule Ball or not?" Impatient with his slack jaw and delayed response, she continues, "Because if not, let me know and I will find someone else to go with."

"Oh," he begins. "Oh! Lavender, do you, erm, want to go to the Yule Ball with me?" His cheeks are bright red and he fiddles with his ear nervously. She breaks out into a wide smile.

"Of course." She leans forward to peck him on the cheek. "Look presentable." Then she disappears down the corridor.
