avatar_500 She was the most beautiful woman in all the Northern Water Tribe and her sixteenth birthday was fast approaching. As the date loomed closer, he began to work on his present. He made several practice pendants, carving wood then rock then ice - trying to find the perfect material and the perfect design. He waited all week for the arrival of fabric and dyes from the Earth Kingdom so he could dye the choker the perfect deep blue to match her eyes. It was supposed to be a long process but they all said Pakku took it more seriously than any young man before him.
Pakku did take it seriously, believing the necklace would stand in for all the feelings he was unable to express with words. It was true he did no know Kana very well but that did not stop him from believing she would accept his offer of marriage. He was very gifted with waterbending, as well as very handsome. They would make a great match and there was talk all throughout the tribe of these two and their future. Even from the beginning of the process he never had a second thought.
Attaching the pendant at last to the strap of fabric, Pakku admired his work. He laid it across his arm, comparing the colors to his skin. It would look beautiful on Kana - but then, everything always did.
Four days later, she accepted gracefully, allowing Pakku to clasp the betrothal necklace beneath her braided hair. She kissed his cheek and he grinned all day and all night. The next morning he woke with the sun to practice waterbending. It was hours before he returned from the edge of camp. His father greeted him without a smile.
On that day, Pakku’s heart hardened. He had never been so wrong.
