As I walked around grounds today, I was expecting to see more. Of the hundreds of people I passed on the way to classes, I saw three who showed any outward support. I don't care that it happened five years ago; the families of those who lost their lives and the families of soldiers fighting overseas haven't forgotten... and never will. I don't care if you consider yourself conservative, liberal, populist, or libertarian, and your view on the Iraq war certainly doesn't matter. What counts is that you remember what happened that day. What counts is that you show respect and support for the people whose lives were changed forever.
Even if you remained seemingly untouched by those events, you know someone who has. My dad knew quite a few people in the WTC and the Pentagon when the planes hit. When he was in the Navy, he made several trips a year to the Pentagon where American Flight 77 crashed. Thank God he retired early or he might have been there. Think of what could have happened to you, and try to understand the pain others are still going through. Don't turn the other way just because you weren't directly affected.
Remember our fallen heroes.
