They had tracked the entity through time and all corners of space, and when they finally catch up to It, the TARDIS has landed in the center of a London center and it's Christmas Eve in 1998.
It hisses and it threatens - telepathically, at least, and Martha is screaming over and over, needing to know what words that It is using to woo him. The entity's device has a countdown and it quickly appraching zero, and when the Doctor finally defeats it the device withers around itself. They had only five seconds.
"But what was it counting--." But Martha doesn't finish, because someone has interrupted them.
A woman laiden with shopping bags runs straight into the Doctor. "Oy! Watch yourself," she yells, and it is unmistakably Jackie Tyler. Two children are following close behind, Rose and Mickey. Too young.
The Doctor stammers. Rose is barely 13 and certainly not old enough to him a flirtacious once-over with her eyes before being dragged along by Mickey, acting the older and wiser 15-year-old.
"First contact," the Doctor says, watching them blend back into the shopping crowd.
