Do you have children?

Oh, boy.

Listen, so I don't know what I did exactly to deserve this kind of payback from a show, not the least of which being Spooks (like WHAT).

So far, this season has featured the following not in my head or in fic but in actual reality: HARRY PROPOSES MARRIAGE (!), which Ruth cannot accept because surprise they are already work married so whatever why go the extra step since depression and terrible life decisions makes their love potentially awkward to justify to the neighbors (!!!). (Do not get me started on why Harry and Ruth are even ever under the impression that them being married needs to involve Sussex in the first place. Seriously, guys, just pop out for a lunch meeting, get hitched at whatever the British equivalent of City Hall is, then get back to the business of saving the world. HONESTLY, THIS IS ALL I HAVE EVER WANTED, SO, JUST POINTING IT OUT.) It has had Ruth apparently needing a large glass of red wine before calling Harry late at night. There was that time they argued in front of the staff children team of other spies.

NATURALLY. THE ONLY NEXT STEP WOULD BE: RUTH GOES OUT IN THE FIELD.

Aside from the fact that it was all a lovely non-callback to Ruth 1.0 ("shall I hit him again, Adam?!") and Harry's assessment at the end of Season 4 that she's a natural borne spook (OF COURSE) - let's talk about that subject line, shall we? I don't think I'm reaching at all when I say Season 8 Ruth was a person who thought she was normal and just having to adjust back to a ~spy lifestyle, while Season 9 Ruth is finally coming around to the realization that she is actually innately a spy who was only pretending to be normal that one time. She doesn't have children; George wasn't her husband, and Nico wasn't her son, no matter how much she told herself that they were or how well she filled that role in their lives. In the end it was just a role (a legend). When the hot commodity doctor of the week in the question asks Ruth if she has kids - and Ruth says no - I believe her! Despite how painful admitting that truth must be for her, I don't believe that she's lying. Nico is not her son. Ruth Who Lives in Cyprus With George was never a real person, not really, just like any other legend. I don't know if I would have believed her in a similar situation last season, but I believe her now.

Like, this is Spooks, so I genuinely hesitate to even say this out loud, but... are Harry and Ruth going... to... be... all right?! I GASP TO THINK. (Please remember, kids. City Hall. Sussex is I'm sure extremely boring.)

This episode: RUTH IN THE FIELD. RUTH GETS THE GREEK MYTHOLOGY REFERENCE AND EVERYONE ELSE JUST STARES HER WHILE SHE OBVIOUSLY WONDERS WHY NO ONE ELSE DID FIRST. HER MANDARIN AND WU ARE PRETTY GREAT, BUT HER CANTONESE IS JUST TERRIBLE. (No really, the way in which every single person on the Grid immediately turned to Ruth when they listed the languages the new translator was supposed to speak was... more than a little great.) (I want a deleted scene in which she argues about her call sign of gazelle.)

In conclusion, I literally do not care about Lucas and/or John or honestly, what is your name? Not mean or anything, it's all just so ~vague that I'm honestly not about to care until I should. (Thing that I did appreciate: wiping the touchscreen for fingerprints! This is one of these practical but sometimes obvious oversights that I enjoy.) Apparently next week wants to change my mind re: this, so that's awesome, go for it? I'll bet he stole a man's identity in Korea, DIDN'T HE?

BUT IN REAL CONCLUSION: SHOW, IF YOU MUST INSIST ON BEING ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE FIC I WRITE, THEN THE LEAST YOU COULD DO WOULD BE TO INCLUDE SOME SORT OF FORMAL WEAR. /putting that out there

Yes. Thank God for that.

Related: oh crap, is this post my Tumblr pledge? I don't want to make a real Tumblr pledge. I just want to know that from time to time I will have a place to comfortably be able to go akjsfhakjshfkajshfkajhfkafhaf instead of being all serious and stuff.
