The wind snatched at her hair with greedy fingers and she pushed the rebellious strands back behind her ear distractedly as she looked down at the embossed card Vance handed her with accusing eyes. "Doing?" she repeated.

"Yeah, if we're not getting married, what are we going to be?..."

A definition of what they were going to be? Everything was closing in claustrophobically, with too much pressure - to be honest with him when she was struggling to be honest with herself, to make a decision about her whole life and his, and she didn't know other than she wasn't ready yet. She felt like she was going to explode or throw up. He was still talking.

"Stop," she whispered, then more firmly. "Stop Vance, just... give me a minute to think. Please..." She laid a hand on his arm, pleading with him.

His mouth opened as if to disagree then he seemed to come to his senses. "Okay."

She sat down still holding the wedding invitation in her hand, legs hanging over the edge of the bridge, swinging them like a small child. "You knew... you knew I wasn't ready to get married and you still had these printed." She waved it at him and sighed deeply. "I love you but sometimes you frustrate me so much."

"I didn't know, I had a feeling," he said defensively, then more softly, "I didn't want to admit that you might not love me anymore." He sat down next to her and took the invitation back, staring at it.

"Me either." She shook her head. "But guess what, stupid, I do love you, never stopped, even if you were being incredibly dense while I was happy in denial-land."

He snorted and smiled at her. "I guess I should've realised when you didn't have time to pick up the dress or flowers or take those dance lessons or anything else."

"Dress?" she asked suddenly, she'd never told him more than a few teasing clues and the name of the boutique. "You mentioned that already. How did you know which dress to get?"

"Uh, you mentioned it looked like an upside down flower..." he said helplessly, shrugging. He described it too accurately for it to be a mistake.

She'd held it in her hands, the fabric light as air against her skin and for a moment, everything had felt so right as she stepped into it and the skirt of tulle petals swirled around her legs like an incoming tide as she walked and danced around the store. Jupiter hadn't been there but Namorita had wiped her eyes and danced with her until they collapsed into giggles.

"Well," she said with a chuckle. "That sounds like the right dress. You did good."

"I-I did?" He looked at her, half relieved, half confused. "I don't understand." Then added, "I thought you didn't want to get married?"

Her heart jerked at the resigned tone in his voice with a side of self-pity. "No. I said I wasn't ready. Everything seems to be rushing us towards the altar and I'm having second thoughts about getting married this year. Actually, I'm freaking out about it." She closed her eyes and breathed a sigh of relief, she'd said it out loud. "Can't we just enjoy a long engagement first?"

He didn't answer.

"Vance?"

"Thinking."

"Vance!" she growled, slapping his arm.

"Don't hit!" He grinned. "The only problem is we've got these non-refundable tickets to Paris."

"Paris?" she squeaked, hyperventilating.
