A/N: This is a weird one for me guys. I am not a Delena shipper, and I don't follow the mentality that Elena really loves Damon, she just doesn't know it yet, so the following was actually painful for me to write. But I just got to thinking and then it had to be a fic (ficlet? drabble? I've got my terminology all mixed up).
One thing Elena knows: one move and she and Damon would fall easily, almost naturally together.
But she would lose Stefan forever.
He’d blend into the world-probably with Caroline-unwilling to hurt her and, so, unwilling to hurt his brother. There would be no more late night tousles and no more green glow of his eyes in her lamplight. No more of his hands wrapped around her face like she is everything in his world. His steadying presence; his quiet, persistent, eating-her-whole passion; the soul that could never have been young that she needs like safety and desires like security all would be-gone. And she’s sure she can’t handle a world with him away from her.
One thing Elena knows (and doesn’t like to think about): no moves and she and Stefan remain perfectly together.
And Damon remains forever.
He’d stay on their periphery smirking and killing innocents and fighting his way back into her good graces. He’d drink the town out of house and home, annoy Caroline to no end, threaten everyone within earshot, toss wisecracks like wishing well pennies. He’d be her best friend (during the periods when she’d forgiven him of his last offense). And he would never, ever leave her.
She doesn’t want to think she stays with Stefan so she can have them both.
