Hope I don't offend anyone here...but this has been bothering me for a long time because I go to church every weekend and can't stop thinking about it.
Well let's take Holy Family for example. We have a church that was pretty much doing just fine...and then we go off and buy a 2 million dollar new one. The fact that we have a building at all is so hypocritical it's ridiculous, let alone one costing 2 million dollars. Need I remind you of the people dieing of starvation on a day to day basis in third world nations and that's not even to mention those dieing in our own country, yet we have the audacity to spend such a large amount of money on something that is purely material. I think if Jesus were to come back, he'd be appauled at how far out of whack his church has become. We've let our religion become a building, and guess what...we can't take it with us. Sure I've been told that the reason we spend so much money on a church is so that we can honor God. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, seriously. I'm pretty sure that when you get to heaven, God won't judge you based on how big of a church you attended. And the truth is 2 million dollars would save so many lives and instead we're sitting our cushioned asses down in an air conditioned building filled with its great stained glass, varnished wood, and golden chalases. If you want to get the full effect of what I'm saying, watch the movies Stigmata and Dogma. They're both great movies and just talk about how things have been corrupted over the ages in our churches. Stigmata talks about how the Catholic church has decided not to honor the Dead Sea Scrolls. What are the Dead Sea Scrolls you ask? Well they're one of the earliest copies of the Bible ever found, written in the language that Jesus spoke, and most likely closest to his actual word. Want to know why the Catholic church disregards these scrolls? It's because they contain extra gospels. One of which speaks about how there is no need for a building in the church of God. "Lift a stone and you will find me, Split wood and I will be there" - excerpt from the Dead Sea Scrolls. The fact is, the church should be based on your spiritual link to God, not how big of a building you can put together. And it seems I have gotten to the point of rambling. So I'll leave you to ponder those things.
