Aug 11, 2008 23:12

Title: Empty Vessels
Author: Claire
Disclaimer: Doctor Who and all its characters are owned by the BBC and all those associated with the production of the series. I'm merely using their characters for entertainment and non-monetary purposes.
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: Donna, Wilf
Warnings: Post JE, so definite spoilers.
Summary: Sequel to Echo. Prompt #34 - Alone from here
Author notes: I’m not even going to pretend to try and write a drabble, because I just can’t. I seem to have some sort of physical incapability to write just 100 words, so this is 373 words long. Also, there will be a sequel to this. I have a few different scenes in my head, which should be a little less dreary than this one!

She closed the door quietly behind her, but was finding it far harder to close off the emotions that were coursing through her.

Exhilaration, excitement, fear, joy, happiness…emptiness. Suddenly, she had felt so empty and alone.

She returned her grandfather’s greeting half heartedly, assuring him she’d been nowhere near the so-called ‘alien invasion,’ though she had no idea why she felt the need to lie to him. Sitting down at the kitchen table, she let her head fall forward and massaged her temples lightly.

The two strangers on the street were a frozen picture behind her closed eyes. If she didn’t know any better she could have sworn she heard his voice in her head on the street. She knew it wasn’t possible, he was too far away and she hadn’t even seen his lips move but she instinctively knew it was him.

The remembrance of the brush of his mind against hers, so soft, so gentle with that whispered warning caused a shiver to run down her spine. And after she’d run for her life, running which suddenly seemed so natural to her, she’d felt so empty.

It had only been a split second, but she felt bereft of that brief presence in her mind. And it made no sense, nobody can enter another person’s mind, she knew that. But something deeper inside her insisted that was exactly what had happened, and a gaping hole was slowly being revealed to her. A hole that she knew had something to do with a skinny man in a brown pin striped suit.

“You okay, love?”

Her gramps had that same sorrowful look that seemed to be an almost constant these days when he spoke to her.

She smiled, though it felt forced. “I’m fine, Gramps, I’m…” She frowned, her brow furrowing in confusion.

“Donna? What is it love?”

“I’m not fine,” she said slowly, though it made no sense to her. “I’m, I’m all right Gramps. I’m all right.”

She smiled back at him, grinning from ear to ear, knowing he must think she was completely barmy. She may have felt anything but all right, but for some reason she knew that was exactly how to describe the swirling feelings inside her. All right.
