24 Finale

Jun 06, 2007 19:27

I just saw the season finale of 24 on Sunday, and really, I don’t know what to say. I mean it's taken me this long to get over it.

So I'm going to have a little ranting session now. Please ignore if by now you're sick of all the giving out about 24! ;)

Overall, the series has been a disappointing exercise in repeating and rehashing old plots. Once again, we had the Arab terrorists hating America for it’s western values, an attack on CTU - during which a beloved character gets killed off (again!), the director of CTU stands down, the people Jack cares about get hurt, killed, irreparably damaged etc. Jack has to make hard decisions and kills someone he works with for the good of the country etc. etc.

And some of the characters were a bit...off...

Bill - Don’t know how hebecame Jack’s new best friend. And WTF is with the psychic ability Bill has to read Jack's mind at the end of the episode when he jumps off the helicopter?! Still, I love him! He always does the right thing in the end even when Karen needs him after firing him in a less than nice way. He was one my few highlights of the season!

Nadia - I don’t like her but I don’t hate her. She was a bit of a non entity for me. I thought she was a bit cardboard like and wishy washy, but if she's around next year she might grow on me. Especially if she's with Doyle, because, honestly, I saw zero chemistry between her and Milo. Her and Doyle however…

Milo - I really felt for him, because I know he loved Nadia, and then they went and killed him, sacrificing himself for the woman he loved! As if he didn’t suffer enough having to play bodyguard for the eternally whinging Marilyn Bauer (I will not mention this woman again, she's not even worthy of my ranting. lol)!! Definitely a huge change from Day 1, but I’ll still miss him

Morris - I have a major, major problem with Morris. If you're a fan, please skip. He creeped me out big time this season. I kind of liked him last year. He ws annoying but mildly amusing. This year he started off annoying and as the day wore on, I just found him extremely manipulating. He seems to have this power over Chloe to make her doubt herself and think there’s something wrong with her. That she needs to change, heeven told her he loved her but couldn’t be with her basically because of her personality. In all honesty, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out the new ‘mature’ Chloe wasn’t as a result of his manipulation and influence. And now she’s tied him for the rest of her life due to baby O’Brian. But, he definitely doesn't deserve Chloe!

Audrey - I’m really not sure what to say about her! I really wish someone could tell me how it is I’m meant to believe that she went to China on her own and searched for Jack, because I just don’t get it. This is not something the Audrey of Season 4 or even Season 5 would have done. It just seemed like a cheap way of ramping up Jaudrey with a nonsensical plot, and a means of torturing Jack even more. It was a weak attempt to try to get the sympathetic vote for Audrey and Jaudre.

And I have to admit, in this they managed to succeed with me. I do feel sorry for her, because as bad and annoying, and whiny as she was in the last two days, to just take her apart like that and turn her into a barely functioning vegetable was unnecessary, I feel. And she's pretty much written out now. I’m sure she’ll go the way of Terri and Kim i.e. being mentioned at least once every single season from now on, even if she doesn’t appear in it, but seriously she'llnever be back properly. If she does appear back having made a miraculous recovery, I think it would be the last straw for the general audience of 24. Though, I wouldn’t put it past TPTB to do this in the last season of 24! Plus, I have to say, I don’t really buy that Jack got through to her during those few minutes they were together locked up in CTU. I think it’s very convenient that she utters the name of a place that has the tactical teams out of CTU just as the Chinese are getting ready to infiltrate it!

Doyle - I thought he was going to be a robotic Jack wannabe, but I actually grew to like him a lot! And I thought he and Nadia have a hell of a lot more chemistry than Nadia & Milo ever did. I wouldn't mind seeing him again. He's no Chase though ;p

Tom Lennox - My absolute favourite new character in Day 6! I hated him at first, but then I grew to love him. He's so funny, and his face when he heard about VP & Lisa! Priceless!! And then waiting in the van while she had her way with Daniel Jackson. Brilliant! I hope they keep him around, I liked how he could still disagree with Karen but in the end he respected their differences and learned to work around them. I'd love to see him back next year, I really enjoyed him this year :D

Jack - My poor, poor baby! I'd just like to take this opportunity to say Kiefer Sutherland is one amazing actor. Really, I mean, he had a few dodgy lines and situations during the day, but that man can act!

So Jack comes from a psycho family with an evil sociopath for a father and a lapdog for a brother. I can only assume his mother was a saint! But he's sweet with Josh, and I have to admit I was surprised when Josh bashed his grandfather over the head in the finale and nearly shot him. Jack talking him out of it was lovely!

I really felt for him in the finale when he was with Audrey and he realised he couldn't be with her. And I'm thinking the "I love you with all my heart and always will," was a gut reaction. I'm sure he does love her, and I'm sure he said the exact same thing, or something similar after Terri died. Jack will have another woman in his life in the future - not Chloe.

With all the talk there was about Jack getting 'lighter' at the end of the day, I have to admit I thought it was the perfect opportunity to get Kim back and give him some hope of a chance with her, but...whatever. I don't think he's contemplating killing himself at the end of the day, that's just not something Jack would do, especially when he kept himself alive in China because he didn't want to die for nothing.

Although, I have to say, I think he was way out of line holding Hellar responsible for not getting him out of China. (My sister and I had a bit of a row over this after it ended - she thinks he was right, I don't!) I'm sure he did as much as he could but really the president has more sway, and I would have thought if any president would have tried to get him back it would be Wayne Palmer!

Chloe - I don't think I've ever seen cry as much! Maybe she wasn't as bad as Audrey in Day 4, but she can't have been far off! I'm putting it down to hormones, but still...

I still refuse to believe she didn't look for Jack in China. That's just so ridiculous unbelievable, I can't believe the writers actually put that down on paper. They're crazy. Chloe is fiercely loyal to her friends, she would never have just forgotten about Jack like that and moved on with her life without doing everything she could to try and find him.

And I don't like her with Morris. She doesn't trust him and he doesn't like or understand the trust she has in Jack. And he made her cry. Again. He broke up with her and now that he's got her knocked up they'll probably be playing 'happy families' in Day 7.

Where was the sarcastic, snarky Chloe we all love? She had one or two good lines, but other than that, there was nothing. Plus, she seemed to have a habit of disappearing for large chunks of episodes without any explanation or anyone querying where she was.

Jack & Chloe - Basically non-existent. I'm not sure they're even friends anymore. Their reunion was touching and the first time Jack smiled. But apart from that, there wasn't really anything between them.

He yelled at her upset nobody had told him about Audrey, and then she helped him dismantle a nuclear bomb. Apart from that, the only time seemed to want anything to do with her, was when he needed her to do something illegal for him again.

And God love her, she did it, trusting he was doing the right thing. Honestly, I know Jack isn't his normal self, and he's had a crap two years, never mind Day 6, but I'm not sure he deserves Chloe. I mean, when he was going to blow himself up with the component he rang Bill and then didn't even mention saying so much as a thank you to Chloe.

I don't know what to make of it. TPTB just seemed determined to destroy any Jack/Chloe frienship, never mind anything more, that I'm not sure they can realistically recover from it.

Wow, that's a lot of ranting. If you've managed to make it to the end, congratulations! I would have given up ages ago ;)

Day 7 can only get better! Right?
