I was blue, just as blue as I could be
Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me

Skies were gray but they're not gray anymore
("Blue Skies" by Irving Berlin)

Monochrome

Before Kurt meets Blaine, his world is viewed in shades of gray - there is no color aside from that of rainy skies, worn tires, and the roof on his house. The dismal hue is spread like a blanket over the atmosphere, contaminating everything he encounters.

Even the people cannot be seen in color.

Gray is everywhere, splashed like paint over every last piece of his surroundings - from the most insignificant blade of grass to the tallest tree. Nothing is spared.

Kurt himself is hit the hardest by this sudden uniformity. This is how sadness manifests itself physically; it creates a veil over your eyes that makes you see the world in monochromatic tones.

When Blaine holds Kurt’s gaze for the first time, he brings back memories of color; apples are red again. The grass is green.

And Blaine’s eyes, the last to cling stubbornly to a shade the color of asphalt, slowly shift as Kurt and Blaine find that they have begun to cultivate a tenuous bond.

In April, Kurt finally learns that Blaine’s eyes are cocoa colored - it comes as a sort of epiphany after they kiss for the first time.

A sudden spark of hope takes root in his chest, peeling away the layer of sadness that has ensnared his body for so long now.

Suddenly, the blindness is lifted - Blaine is painting his world with the proper colors, stroke by stroke.

Kiss by kiss.
