Summary: Without her powers, Tonks struggles with her identity. Then her Patronus changes…
They think she gets the job because of what she can do, and Tonks spends her first two years on the Auror squad proving to her colleagues she got it because of who she is.
Apparently no one special, she thinks, when she glimpses her pale, mousy, unchangeable reflection. Not a Dark wizard catcher, just another victim of a mad aunt who's one of the Darkest of them all. Sidelined from the action to play hall monitor to a bunch of school kids.
Unwanted. Unlovable.
"Expecto Patronum!" her desperate cry rings out as the Dementors close in.
The enormous silvery form that charges from the tip of her wand, scattering the fell beings with swipes of claws and snarling fangs, nearly causes her fingers to drop it. Instead, she tightens her fist around the birch handle and throws back her shoulders as her new Patronus doubles back to swirl around her, ministering gently to her with its shimmery muzzle.
Powerful. Beautiful.
And so deeply loved.
But still a little fragile, she realizes, when Severus Snape sneers at the new Patronus--like a butterfly, newly emerged from its cocoon.
When will she be strong enough to spread her wings and fly?
