Summary: They made sure that their jobs wouldn't get in the way of their relationship. They had to.

He warned her it would be hard to date a doctor. She insisted she was up for the challenge. Then kissed him. Only, her kiss wasn’t a kiss, it was a promise that he felt through every nerve in his body.

When he came home from work one night and slammed his files down on the table and went straight to the fridge for a beer, she knew it was going to be one of those days. The fact that it was nearly 4 hours after the end of his shift and he was only just now getting home gave her the idea long ago that it was one of those days.

She tossed her magazine to the coffee table and picked up her glass, heading to where he was still in the kitchen. “Robert?” She leaned against the doorway.

“I’m sorry you waited up Stella. Every time I tried to call I got paged. You don’t have to stay up; I’ve still got a little to do.” He still hadn’t turned around to look at her as he assembled a small sandwich to go with his beer and paperwork.

Walking into the kitchen, she gently placed her hand on his back, sliding it up to his shoulder as she stepped into his line of sight. “I expect that you’re going to come home late sometimes, baby. All I want is for you to kiss me when you come in.” She leaned to kiss him on the cheek softly then turned, eyes slightly downcast, to head to their bedroom.

She felt his hand grab her arm before she was four feet away. Turning back to him, she saw the apologetic look in his eyes and smiled softly.

“Hi Stella,” he pulled her a little closer while moving in to close the gap. He placed his hand on the back of her head as he rested his forehead against hers. “I had a rough day. But that’s not your fault.”

“But I’m here if you want to talk about it,” she suggested, wrapping her arms around his waist.

He shook his head. “Nah. Not tonight. Tonight, I just want you.” He kissed her gently and let out a sigh. “I still have a mountain of paperwork though.”

“I’m off tomorrow,” she began as she reached up to undo his tie. “If I’m asleep when you get done with work and you still want to talk or watch tv or make love or just read the newspaper ….don’t hesitate to wake me.” She slipped the tie off his neck and unbuttoned the top buttons of his shirt. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere. No matter how human you may become,” she grinned.

He let a chuckle bubble to the surface. “You’re the best.”

She reached over and picked up his plate and beer off the counter, placing them in his hands. Cupping his cheek gently, she let her eyes flutter closed and kissed him on the corner of the mouth. “Don’t ever forget it,” she whispered against his cheek. “Night, babe.”

Retreating toward the bedroom, she knew he wouldn’t wake her up when he came in to join her. He would kiss her and tell her he loved her and pull her close. And for both of them, that was the best part of their day.
