Summary: "The Doctor is wearing a dark blue woolen hat with white TARDISes in it, and he beams at her when he realises what she’s talking about." (is TARDISes the plural for TARDIS?)

She is always kind of expecting a surprise, ever since she first met that strange man in the shop when she was nineteen, and for all the things she has seen, she shouldn’t be surprised with this. However, what she sees when she goes downstairs to the front door still manages to surprise her a little.

“Doctor,” she calls. “What is this?”

“What?” the Doctor asks, not looking at her while he finishes buttoning up his coat.

“That hat?” she asks, pointing at his hat.

The Doctor is wearing a dark blue woolen hat with white TARDISes in it, and he beams at her when he realises what she’s talking about.

“It’s a winter hat!” he says, as if it was the most brilliant thing in the universe. “Isn’t it brilliant? Your mum got you one, too,” he adds, reaching out for something inside his coat pocket. He pulls out a pink woolen hat with the same white TARDISes and smiles wider.

Rose stares at it, then laughs a little.

“That’s ridiculous,” she points out, but smiles fondly anyway.

“No, it isn’t!” he says. “It’s brilliant!”

She puts the hat on her head and nods, laughing again. The Doctor is still smiling and she crosses the small distance between them, taking both his hands in hers and entwining their fingers.

“You still miss her, don’t you?” she asks in a low voice then and he looks away from her face, focusing on their hands.

“Yes,” he says it like it’s a confession. “More than anything in the world.”

She nods, looking down at their hands and softly carressing his with her thumbs. She doesn’t know what to say on moments like that, doesn’t think that saying she misses the TARDIS and everything else too would be of any help, so she just squeezes his hands, trying to comfort him.

The Doctor shrugs after a minute, looking back at her with a small smile. “It’s been worth it, though,” he says, squeezing her hands back. “It’ll always be worth it, with you,” he says, as if it’s also a confession, and she slowly smiles back at him.
