Summary: Back in England after the events of LWW, Edmund copes with his reaction to winter snow

Edmund watched the falling snow. Once he'd loved the winter, looked forward to sled rides and snow forts and ice skating. That had been before the Witch, before her bleak, icy castle and a world buried in the snows of eternal midwinter; frozen as hard and cold as her heart.

He shuddered with the chill of recall. When he'd been a Prince in Narnia, he'd found a way to enjoy winter again - riding through the woods with friends, marveling at the way light played on crystal flakes and sparkling icicles. But that had been another gift from Aslan, a freedom that came with redemption. Since returning to England, to the 'real world', he'd found it harder to feel that freedom...here his heart still held the fear of unrelenting cold.

As he turned away from the window, the faint sound of carol touched his ear

...Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed...

The words echoed in Edmund's heart like the first crack in the ice of the Snow Queen's winter. He looked back through the window and was struck with awe by the brightness of snow on evergreen.
