In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.
--"A Christmas Carol" or "In the Bleak Midwinter" by Christina Rosetti
Bleak Midwinter
Robin Hood silently flexed his fingers and chose an arrow. Nocked it, drew it, and released, and it whizzed into the heart of a motherless doe (he had been tracking it for what felt like days, and knew all her habits). She was down instantly, spared a lingering death.
Dinner fit for a Lord.
There was snow all around him - he had loved the snow as a lad, missed it in the sweltering Palestine. Now, it controlled his every move as an outlaw. His fingers and nose were always near frostbite, and he was always cold.
Robin longed for spring.

Marian’s candle sputtered in the drafts of Knighton Hall. She held in a sigh, despising the embroidery at hand. But when one was engaged, embroidery was called for to complete a dress. The King might return anytime, and Marian could not be caught unprepared.
She longed for a new life, not one the dress represented, but one where she did not have to pretend to enjoy something she did not, where she did not have to feign love of Gisbourne to earn the good graces of the Sheriff. For the safety of her father (and herself).
Marian longed for spring.
