"Ser's eyes water," said the perfumer, with a husky chuckle. "Lady should not choose northern pines for clothes and sheets if husband does not approve."

Odes should be written about this little bit. All of it in the words of a OC and so perfect. We know he's tearing up and why, and on top of that there is the confusion that he is her husband. Perfection.

And you just about top it here at the end: Even if she does not understand that smelling it on his clothes, in his bed…on her… is as unbearable to him as she finds the odors of the Dothraki horde.

Gah! Scent is such a powerful trigger, is it not? I love the notion of him being tortured by her smelling of something to which he feels so closely connected.

Marvelous, my dear. You've outdone yourself.

Scent is such a powerful trigger, is it not?

I put on some new lotion last week and was thrilled it smelled like my old My Little Ponies. Then Mr. Tater came home and said it smelled like his grandmother's bathroom air freshener. I don't think that's the childhood memory I want to evoke, even if he does say her bathroom smelled really good.

Erm, to the point: scent memories get me more than anything else, and it hit me that might be perfect for Jorah. I'm grinning so wide at your comments, because I was quite unsure about this one when I hit the post button. *hugs you*

on top of that there is the confusion that he is her husband.

Why can't it be true?!

Ah! I know just what you mean. I can smell them right now. :D

Why can't it be true?!

Because grrm is a crusher of dreams who wants no one to be happy and in love and wants you, the reader, to believe all your favorite characters are dead or are about to die. And for good measure, he will actually kill some of them.

I can smell them right now.

I'm not crazy, am I? They had a nice smell?

GRRM is a monster. A talented monster, but a monster nonetheless. And yet I can't help but hold out hope...

Your icon is amazing.

Oh man, you've packed so much goodness into such a short story. At first I was giggling a little bit, because a Dothraki horde would smell terrible and I was sympathizing with Dany's desire to buy something a little sweeter-smelling! But then all of a sudden it turned incredibly poignant. It seems like Ser Jorah spends so much time being all valiant and knightly that it's easy to forget how much he must miss home, and you did a great job of highlighting that here. I also loved the poetic way you described the sachet's scent, and of course the juxtaposition between his longing for home and his longing for her. Lovely! :)

Aw, yay! I was really biting my nails about this one, so I'm hugely relieved and pleased that you like it so much.

I wanted to write a light start because I haven't really done anything like that for Dany and Jorah, and also because I wanted him to be totally off his guard when the scent and the memories of home hit him. Wasn't sure if I'd juxtaposed them too awkwardly, though!

Thanks so much for your lovely comments. They mean a lot from you! :D
