Summary: Sam likes the in-between times.
I'm on a road trip with my brother.
He'd said it so many times as an explanation to dispel strangers' suspicions. It was just about the only truth he ever uttered to people. They were on a road trip-a twisted and sometimes murderous road trip, but there you go.
All the stereotypes were there: bad diner food, questionable motels (which for some reason Dean always got to pick), the stench of truck-stop bathrooms, and the endless miles that stretched before them as they traveled from job to job.
Dean drove. He liked the feel of the road through his feet and hands as he gripped the Impala's wheel. That was ok with Sam. He liked watching the scenery. He was always pleasantly surprised at how relaxing the contours of the US landscape were.
Today they were headed for a small town in Ohio. Bobby had called with a tip on a banshee wreaking havoc there. Sam had already done his research for the day and plotted their route on the battered road atlas Dean kept in the glove compartment.
They would reach their destination in a few hours, so for now Sam was content for his eyes to glaze as they passed field after field of soybeans and corn. Sunlight winked off the Impala's hood, wind sweet with the smell of growing things rushed into Sam's open window. There was no talk, just Foghat blasting on the stereo and miles bleeding away.
In the down time, life was pretty good.
