A New Beginning
He stood in the doorway for a while, just looking at her. She still had the ability, after all these years, to take his breath away. Cordelia was sitting on a bench under a tree, idle snowflakes floating down around her, unheeded.
Aral sat next to her, his hand searching instinctively for the slim fingers that fitted his so well. “You look thoughtful, my love.”
She sighed. “How many titles do you have?”
He frowned. “Too damn many,” he growled. “Why?”
“Just that we’re soon going to be given the most important of all. And I’m scared, thrilled and, if I’m honest, rather disbelieving that it’s ever come about. How did we get to be this old? Where did the years go? It’s a new chapter, a new beginning. Are we ready for this challenge?”
His rough, war-scarred hand tightened on hers and as the snow drifted down onto grey and brown heads, they sat contemplating the future. Grandparents - Miles’ children!- it was going to be a vast responsibility.
