Summary: On a May morning, a little girl is puzzled....
It hasn’t been a nice day. Gruel and no marzipan. I have a pain in my head. I had to stay indoors. Practised my letters. I can read big words now. Nursey pulled my hair when she was brushing it and smacked me when I complained. Now I am just a Lady and not a Princess she is allowed. I won’t forget. I’ll never forget people who hurt me.
People whisper violently above my head. “Today, it’s today! The Boleyn witch dies today. He’ll never do it. She’ll survive. It’s just rumours run wild.” They think I am too little to understand. But I know a witch is a bad lady and I am a Boleyn. Have I been bad? Will I die today? I have said my prayers, just in case, but wish Mother or Father or Death would come and explain it to me. They want me to go to bed, but I cry and refuse. I decide to sit by the door and wait, just in case.
