The screaming wakes Blaine every night.

It’s sickening to think that he still dreams about the past; Blaine knows exactly what horrors Kurt is forced to relive.

Karofsky. Rage thrums through Blaine at the mere mention of his name. The anger Blaine feels, the unadulterated hatred, travels the network of his veins until it reaches his mind, clouding his thoughts.

Oftentimes, he is forced to release a scream of his own, muffled into a pillow, before he can roll over to comfort Kurt.

Blaine hears Kurt whimper beside him and sneaks a glance out of the corner of his eye, trying to decide if rolling over would terrify Kurt even more.

He settles for remaining motionless, but trying to talk Kurt out of his nightmare - he isn’t that great with words, nowhere near Kurt’s level when it comes to knowledge of the English language, but Kurt seems to be soothed by Blaine’s stammered attempts at comfort.

“Kurt,” he starts, watching as his boyfriend’s eyes flicker behind their lids, the motions rapid and frantic.

Kurt releases a strangled whine, rolling into Blaine’s side, his hands fluttering uselessly in search of something. Blaine takes Kurt’s hands in his, noting how cold they are as he rubs circles over the skin with the calloused pad of his thumb.

Kurt’s breathing is hitched, shallow; he occasionally lets out a gasp laced with fear.

Blaine’s heart breaks just watching and hearing this. He wonders why Kurt was targeted in such a way when he is nothing short of the nicest person Blaine has ever met - it’s not like he’s done anything wrong.

Karofsky is the one who has fucked up so badly - they’re in college now and Kurt still moves in his sleep like he’s trying to shield Blaine from Dave’s pushes and shoves yet again; it’s gotten to the point that neither of them mention the nightmares over breakfast anymore. They used to be infrequent enough that they were a topic of daily conversation; now they’re just something the two have to work around and ignore.

Blaine hates it; he hates what their lives have been reduced to under the cover of night. Daytime is normal. But when Kurt falls unconscious every evening, Blaine hopes beyond hope that tonight is the night they will both enjoy eight hours of sleep rather than spending far too long trapped in their personal hell; there is never a respite.

The most Blaine can do is offer Kurt shelter, a safe space made by the cocoon of his arms.

“Kurt,” he’s whispering now, a steady mantra: Kurt, I love you.

Someday, it will stop.

For now, Blaine will build the shelter that keeps Kurt safe, protecting him as best he can from the harsh bite of the elements, of life.
