Summary: He really just wanted to set up fireworks.
Hanabi
They got married on her birthday.
When asked about the reason for that, he would say it was because of the many fond memories they had of the date. It wasn’t true, in that he didn’t chose the date because of that.
They had met on her birthday. She had lectured him for arriving late, and he had tried to excuse himself by saying that it was Tanabata. She didn’t find it at all that important.
At the time Nanao was just a little girl studying hard to become a Shinigami. She was the youngest student he had, yet she was the most responsible. Nanao-chan frequently - and openly-criticized him for arriving late. She worked much harder than he did when he was a student.
He remembered thinking she was really cute and that she should be playing with other kids her age instead of spending her afternoons reading all those boring books that even the older kids had difficulty understanding.
He only found out about her birthday years later, though. He saw another kid giving her a gift. After the other girl left he had pulled cute Nanao-chan into a hug and wished her all sorts of good things. And he insisted on taking her to see the fireworks that night, which she refused, saying she didn’t want to bother him.
Of course, he insisted and seeing how the little girl enjoyed that night, he made it a habit to take her every year.
And each year brought them closer, until this day.
But he really hadn’t picked that date because of that. His reason was far less romantic and rational than that.
Truly, he just wanted an excuse to set up fireworks on his wedding day.
