Nothing for you

Hermione was stunned - this was their first wedding anniversary and Ron had surpassed himself. She stood staring round the room at the flickering pink candles, crystal vases full of white roses, the table laid with every conceivable plate and glass, knife, fork and spoon. There was music playing but no musicians - a spell she didn’t think he knew how to perform. There were fountains gently puffing dreadful coloured confetti into the air and their normal wooden floor felt like velvet under her feet.

“Ron - it’s - it’s - ”

“Pretty good, eh?” His face had taken on that proud-little-boy look that twisted her heart and stomach every time she saw it. “I bet you never imagined I could ever do something this romantic, did you?”

Hermione stared at the gold plates and covered dishes. She could only guess what lay inside them - all her favourite things, she was sure. “We said we wouldn’t give each other presents,” she whispered. “I’ve nothing for you.”

“The food’s real,” Ron said anxiously. “And there’s champagne. I know Harry and Ginny have gone to Paris, but I thought… And it looks so great, doesn’t it.” The glee in his voice was hard to bear.

He turned away to pour the wine and Hermione stared at the back of his tousled head with a love that softened the down-to-earth expression she usually wore. Then a sudden shimmer alerted her to disaster and before he could turn back, she froze all the magic in the room before it could vanish - and smiled. Some presents had to be kept secret.
