This was very nearly the last day of my life. But he wouldn't permit me that easy way out.
My shields already battered by his persistent gentle probes at breakfast, I pulled their tattered remnants together out there on the hull. Clutching them around me along with what I thought was courage, I tried to offer us both an escape route. But he'd have none of it and pulled me back to the perilous safety of his ship and his arms.
The real shelter wasn't the improvised blast shield. It was in Jonathan's eyes, in his touch, in his heart.
