One fangirl's journey: A written history

Jul 07, 2013 17:04

I actually wrote this yesterday because I was excessively bored. I posted it to tumblr for a brief time, but took it down for reasons. Now it's going here for reasons I can't quite fathom. I suppose that isn't true. I'm posting it here because I ultimately have more control of who sees it and because this is honestly the way I feel when I ( Read more... )

Ah, POTC. Geez. LOL.

I have a few others of these in common with you too. None in which I was ever pulled into wank, thankfully. Although there was that one group of stalkers in Trek that really tried. But mostly they've just been fun.

*g* Yes, I have heard of your adventures in POTC, but I don't think I heard of the Star Trek stalkers. The Sentinel was the only fandom where I came close to being pulled into Wank. It was a swampy, murky place with lots of sand traps.

Now if there is wank in my fandom, I usually find out from Fandom Wank or word of mouth. I like reading and enjoying and commenting on the fic. I like making friends and enjoying the comradery and shooting ideas back and forth and being silly with some who can appreciate that you are just being silly. That's where I find my fun.

The stalkers pre-date my LJ time. Basically a few women over a period of a couple of years or so joined our Yahoo group for an actor and chattered on about their (probably illegal) activities following this guy and his lady friend, in an escalating tone of possessiveness and mental instability. Unlike on LJ, where such behavior seems to be nurtured and encouraged and aided a lot of times, majority opinion of the group was that they needed to be ejected in a show of tacit disapproval of their activities - and they were. :-)

You stared out exactly as I did! Sherlock Holmes to Star Trek to X-Files, with a side trip to Dr. Who on the way for me ( ... )

Hooray for origins-synchronicity!

I know reading my first fanzine was like finding the Holy Grail, too. Finding a new fanfic that I love gives me that same happy, floaty, tightening-in-your-chest feeling. It truly is an addiction.

The only real fandom craziness was my first online fandom, which was the Sentinel. There was an explosions of fans in that fandom for some reason and so many personality types all pushed together quickly made for some serious drama.

I'm glad you were able to dodge it. BNFs are usually easy to spot. If they are well known in a particular fandom or fandoms and post things with such an air of superiority that it makes you want to roll your eyes 9 times out of 10? You're probably looking at a BNF. At least in their own head.

And your last sentence? You shine. Never change, m'dear. We need more like you.

Oh, boy, do I hear you re: having Small Fandom Radar. Sherlock BBC is, I think, the only time I ever stumbled into a fandom that wasn't tiny and managed to write for a while. I don't think I'm built to keep up with the frantic pace of large fandoms in the long run; I like to have conversations with my readers, and I've always found that easier in smaller fandoms. It can be frustrating, though, I also agree with that: you have whatever small amount of fic is there, and you have what you can write yourself. And that's pretty much it.

And I love that about you. I've always enjoyed our conversations and your fic. Never change.

Yeah. Tiny fandom radar. It's both a blessing and a curse. You can make great, lasting friends, though. If you're lucky.

I always giggle purely out of spite when someone writes a fic inspired by Anne Rice's stuff.

And now I feel horrible because I don't think I ever finished betaing your amazing epic fic and omg I'm so sorry about that and you should send me the rest so I can stop being a shitty friend and finish betaing it don't hate me please ♥

And now I kinda want to do a post like this. Mine would be much shorter, though, as I tend to stick with a fandom until it dies, and then move on =P

LOL about Anne Rice. I hate when I find out the authors I read are dicks. I don't read her anymore, though. So there's that.

Aww, BB. I think we were both going through some things at the time. You really want to try and finish it?

And I would love to hear your fandom origins story. The more the merrier. And yeah. Long fic and long posts. There's definitely a pattern, huh?

Hi!!!
I have been sooooo away from fandom. But today I got this and I had to say hi again! You know my origins: The Dresden Files! Your story is still one of my favorties! I am toooo scared of tumblr. I think since TDF was my ~first~ and everyone involved it was so nice I am spoiled for ever for REAL fandoms.... :S
How have you been? I hope you and your girls are well! Hugs!

Hey cutie! I hope all is well with you. Yeah, I have been away from fandom for a good amount of time, too. I'm slowly making my way back as I tend to be happier when I'm immersed in ficcery.

And I definitely know your origins, m'dear. :D I've missed ya! And your praise is appreciated and cherished, especially after so much time having past.

Tumbler can be fun, but I simply reblog pics from my favorite fandoms. I don't get into drama. I'm glad TDF was such a safe haven for you. They are few sometimes, but that is what makes them so special.

I'm doing okay. I have Molly and Jezzy. I lost Mona and Racket. I don't know if you knew or not. They are well and ornery and just plain sweet. How is your little one?

Hugs you back.
