Ennio Mariconne composed the music for Jules at Jim?!?!?!
How did I never know this; I mean it makes sense, the music is gorgeous, but I can't believe of the hundred times I"ve seen the movie I neither noticed, nor was told about this.
As to Army of Shadows, it was beautiful, if somewhat confusing at points, but Josie's advice is well advised, "Daniele you're reading it too analytically!" I mean this is a guy who helped inspire the nouvelle vague. The mise en scene was spectacular at many points throughout the film, and an introduction to the movie by the head of photography for the film was an awesome addition. His point that the first few shots really give away the main points of the plot you need to understand is true, more so for the french audeince it was intended for since they probably have a better grasp on french history than your average american film slob. It does get confusing if you try to interpret the narrative historically and linearly, but Melville is a genius in this way too though, the narrative really becomes secondary to the extremely compelling characters and mood which is good because they are the best part and putting them center stage was a wise choice. So long story short, Daniele is too analytical, but this movie's amazing style and characters shine so much that even I could give up on complete comprehension and enjoy.
*this probably made no sense; i'm not a film student
... and I found out GSC owed me $94, so I'm not so freaking poor for now!
