I've been noticing first lines lately. I don't think every book has to have a killer first line but I like it when they do. Here are the first lines of the three novels sitting on my desk:
"Dragons," said Mollander. (From GRRM's Feast for Crows)
Having found that her love for her ex-husband, James Lacey, had more or less disappeared, Agatha Raisin, middle-aged owner of a detective agenty in the English Cotswolds, decided to hit another obsession on the head. (From M. C. Beaton's Busy Body)
I answered the phone, and Susan Rodriguez said, "They've taken our daughter." (From Jim Butcher's Changes)
Do you notice first lines? I never used to. I think I assumed they were always something like "The sun was setting over the fields." What are the first lines of the books sitting on your desk?
In other news, I came home from the gym to find my dead-end street blocked off with a "road closed" sign. This is not good. I drove around the barrier and found a bunch of workmen gathered near my driveway. They're apparently going to put asphalt and then something else down. I can drive on the asphalt though they'd prefer I didn't. But driving on the other stuff is NOT ALLOWED. It's a pretty good distance to the closest place I'd be able to park. I guess I'd better get groceries first thing tomorrow.
