Finally, an entry that ISN'T depressing! Whoohoo! Forget about all the family crap that I usually write about. This is about a good thing that happened to me today. Now when do I usually write about something positive?
Anyway, I went to City Hall Park [in NYC, of course] today in this chilly April weather to see one of my favorite bands, Blondie [ya know, the group that sang Heart of Glass, One Way Or Another, Call Me, and Maria? I'm showin' my age, aren't I?]. Their new CD,
The Curse of Blondie, was released today [really good, but not their best] and they were promoting it with a free concert. And it was totally awesome. One hour of old and new stuff and the entire crowd [including yours truly] was totally into it. This was the songlist:
1. Rapture
2. Maria
3. Dreaming
4. Hanging By The Telephone
5. Undone
6. Good Boys
7. End to End
8. One Way or Another
9. Heart of Glass
Overall, it was great hearing the songs live. It actually made me appreciate the songs more, even though standing close to the speakers almost turned me deaf, but that's another story. After the concert, there was an autograph signing for their new CD and I waited 2 hours for that freezing my ass off. But I got the disc signed by all the band members [the album booklet is too glossy for markers]
and I congratulated them on the album and told them how great the concert was. Debbie Harry [the lead singer] asked if I was "fuckin'" crazy for standing in line waiting for an autograph. I said, "Yeah, just as you all were fuckin' crazy for performing outside in the cold for 300 people." She laughed and thanked me for coming and saw my Yankees cap, eliciting a "Go Yankees!" from her. It was pretty sweet. And for a 58 year old woman, she looked DAMN good. I'd still do her! Woof!
But anyway, I got to see one of my favorite bands live for the first time and it was a great experience. They tour in the summer, so I hope to catch them again. Buy the CD, it's good. Maybe a bit too 80s for some, but at the same time, it's very modern and it deserves at least a listen. It's pretty rockin', poppish, jazzy, and danceable all at once. Hear where Madonna, Garbage, and most of all, No Doubt, originated from. Without Blondie, those acts wouldn't be around today. I missed American Idol for Blondie. What will you sacrifice to get a taste of Blondie?
