Golden Globes...That's a Wrap!

Jan 06, 2019 22:06

We are *this* much closer to the end of awards season. Not that much because there’s still the SAG Awards and the BAFTAs and the Oscar nominations haven’t even been announced yet, but we are closer than we were yesterday.

I have watched all of the nominated films*

*Only in the categories of Drama and Musical/Comedy. Only one of the foreign films "Roma" and no animated films. But also not all of the individually nominated films like I didn't see Willem Dafoe's performance in "Eternity's Gate" nor did I see John C. Reilly in "Stan and Ollie" but I saw him in "The Sisters Brothers" and how dissimilar could him playing Oliver Hardy be from that character. So outside of these exceptions, yes, I have seen all of the films...

Except for Glenn Close in "The Wife".

As I said, I have watched all of the nominated films.

Didn’t see him at The Golden Globes so I’m going to cheat fe.and add Colman Domingo who killed it at the BAFTA Tea and the AFI Awards this past weekend.

So who were the winners and the losers both for awards and fashion?

The ceremony itself was enjoyable. Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg started off shakily with some clunkers (Ryan Coogler wasn’t having that “Black Panther” joke at all.) but I think their humor worked. It wasn’t saccharine - there were some very cutting moments like making fun of the producer who proposed during the Emmys or whatever ceremony it was and mocking Lady Gaga's oft repeated quote about "100 people in the room but you only need 1 to believe in you" but they were nowhere as rude as Seth McFarlane and Ricky Gervais. Their one dig - about Emma Stone role in "Aloha" garnered a shout of "I'm sorry" from Stone.

Incredulous that people didn’t uproariously support Regina King’s statement about inclusion riders the way they did for Frances McDormand last year. And while the Times Up and #MeToo movements were mentioned it was more muted this year. They didn’t take the time out to mention people were wearing Times Up bracelets and lanyards this year.

There were very few outfits that wowed me. I did love that green and browns were in play. So in no particular order.

*I am wholly aboard the open-chest position Colman takes.

Laura Harrier (BlackkKlansman) in Louis Vuitton

Amy Adams in Calvin Klein

**There are somethings that will always be true like Garfield hates Mondays, Sprite is the worst soda ever and Amy Adams will always wear a boring, pedestrian dress. Get out of here with this designer norm core Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, too.

Emmy Rossum
**She’s the flip side of the boring coin because Amy Adams plays it safe and bland, while Emmy always wears lovely gowns but she is stuck in Disney Princess mode and that’s almost as bad as a standard sheath dress.

Yvette Nicole Brown

Alyssa Milano

Kiki Layne in Dior
**Love the dress but I wish it were a darker color. She would have looked incredible in a deep plum or maybe a green.

Sandra Oh in Versace and Jodie Comer in Ralph * Russo
**If Jodie lost the arm puffs I would love it more.

**Jodie’s BAFTA tea outfit.

Kate Mara in Mui Mui

**I will finally give credit where it is due. While I can’t stand Kate Mara for the same indefinable reason I hate Peter Skarsgard, I do love this outfit a lot. It’s firing on all cylinders for me.

Idris Elba (in Oszwald Botang) and fiancée and Sabrina Dhowre

**This is decidely a step up for Sabrina after she embarrassed us all by wearing a casual sports dress to the royal wedding.

Miss Golden Globe, Isan Elba

The soon to be former Bond with the people's choice Bond

Yvonne Strahovski in Alberta Ferretti

The Phoenix Siblings : Rain, Joaquin and Summer at the Art of Elysian Charity Event

Linda Cardileni

Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody) in Celine
**Not feeling the Disco!Skipper look. She should look happier. Rami Malek confirmed their relationship as he accepted his award at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

Lucy Liu in Galia Lahav

**Lucy is back to a darker color after going blonde for a bit.

Chris Messina and his blonde ambition

Carol Burnett

Terry and Rebecca Crews

Debra Messing
**What is she thinking?

Jameela Jamil (The Good Place) in Monique Lhuillier

**With costars William Jackson Harper and Manny Jacinto.

Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade) in Gucci
**I’m glad she took time from storming the Death Star.

However, I give her points for wearing Gucci as that was her character’s catchphrase.

Timothee Chalamet in Louis Vuitton

**He really tried but not hard enough. He didn’t want to go full bondage gear like Adam Rippon did last year at the Oscars...

.. so now he looks like he’s wearing the type of harness that parents put on their wayward toddler.

Same with the BAFTA Tea outfit. Why wear a shirt underneath? Isn’t the point of the hole is to be provocative?

**But had he wore nothing I don’t think people could have made this manip as easily.

Heidi Klum in Monique Lhuillier
**Per usual she brings the goods. Gorgeous, yet simple.

**Her fiance Tom Kaulitz does well to be with a fashion icon like Heidi. He has had his own come up since being in the band Tokio Hotel.

Jamie Lee Curtis
**Her body is still a standout and I love the white hair but she went overboard on the bronzer.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Ilsa Fisher

His BAFTA Tea outfit
** I just dig brown so anyone wearing brown gets a win from me.

Ilsa had to wear a blonde wig for a role and she looks unrecognizable. If she wants people to stop confusing her with Amy Adams this is the way to do it.

Kerri Russell in Monique Lhuillier

Jeannie Mai (of The Talk)

Rosamund Pike in Givenchy
**For someone who seems to give off ice princess vibes she is a stunner and daring on the red carpet.

Troye Sivan in Calvin Klein
**The color is terrific and I love the vibe of the suit -very Rockabillly but I can’t abide the baggy look.

He went the Star Fleet route at the BAFTA Tea

Patricia Clarkson in Georges Chakra

Dakota Fanning in Armani Prive

Ricky Martin

**Martin didn’t win but he has something more rewarding: a new baby! He and his husband welcomed a daughter before Christmas.

Michelle Yeoh

Phoebe Waller-Bridges

Hugh Grant

**Hugh now has 5 children but there was a time the only child in his life was his godson, Damian, the son of his ex, Elizabeth Hurley.

This is Damian today.

This piece of jailbait is 16!! Put him away in a dungeon, Elizabeth!

Kate Beckinsale at the W Party

**Kate has broken up with her 20-something comedian boyfriend Matt Rife.

Here’s hoping for Kate and Michael Sheen in 2019

Irina Shayrk and Bradley Cooper

Regina King in Alberta Ferretti (and her grown as hell son)

Justin Hartley and Chrishell Strause

Justin with daughter Isabella at the BAFTA tea

Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsome

Kaley Cucuo

Cody Fern
**YES, YES, 1000x YES! Rock that 80’s smolder, you Aussie tart!

Jim Carrey and girlfriend “Kidding” costar Ginger Gozanga

Janet Mock

Kristen Bell and Dax Shephard

Colson Baker aka Machine Gun Kelly at the WB afterparty

Lea Michele
*What's the point of the plastic midriff cover? Just bare it!

MJ Rodriguez (Pose) in Prabal Gurang
**Gorgeous color and design.

Darren Criss in Dior

Andi McDowell looking like she is fresh from Tarzan's jungle

**Andi starred in S5 of BBC3's "Cuckoo" replacing Taylor Lautner as the comic foil.

Billy Zane at the BAFTA Tea firmly in his Marlon Brando years apparently

Sofia Boutela

**The not so recently single Sofia (she split with longtime boyfriend Robert Sheehan (Mortal Engines) spent some time with her also newly single "Kingsman" costar Taron Egerton.

I'd ship it

Yalitza Aparicio and Maria de Tavira (Roma). Yalitza is in Mui Mui
**I adore Yalitz’s dress and the headpiece.

Frankie Shaw
**Creator and star of Showtime's "SMILF" who is being investigated by Showtime due to allegations of bias and inappropriate conduct. Her costar Samira Weaving quit the show due to Shaw allegedly violating the closed set and watching the dailies of Weaving and their costar Miguel Gomez perform a nude love scene.

Lady Gaga in Valentino

Gaga’s inspiration?

Judy Greer in Alberta Ferretti

**I love women in suits but not huge, David Byrne suits. I’m talking more structured suits maybe like the one Taissa Farmiga wore in “American Horror Story: Apocalypse”.

Susan Keletchi Watson (This is Us)
**Love it!

Elizabeth Perkins

Evan Peters

Sterling K. Brown and Ryan Michelle Bathe

Felicity Huffman
**Sleek dress? Check. Flat hair? Check. As. Always.

Indya Moore (Pose)
*Work it, serve it, work it!

Camille Bella
**How does she keep getting invited to these things???

And since I am incredulous why Camille keeps getting invited to these things..

WHO INVITED CHANCE CRAWFORD AND WHY???

Alison Brie in Vera Wang

**There was some confusion on the red carpet. Alison Brie was told that Chrissy Metz of “This is Us” claimed was caught on mic calling Brie a bitch which Metz denied. Because of this nonsense I kinda wanted Brie to win as Metz and her “This Is Us” siblings were handing out the award in that category.

Emily Blunt in Alexander McQueen

Constance Wu in Vera Wang

Julianne Moore in Givenchy

Julia Roberts in Stella McCartney
**This is perfect for her. It’s sleek and chic.

Caitroina Balfe in Moschino

Ken Yeong and wife
**I love a couple whose fashion compliments each other.

Jessica Chastian in Burberry

Billy Porter
**Absolutely my favorite look of the night by far. He more than made up for his BAFTA and AFI outfits.

I would have preferred a shorter skirt

Richard Gere
**Is expecting a child 16 or so years after the birth of his son Homer with ex-wife Carey Lowell.

Taylor Swift in Versace

Halle Berry in Zuhair Muhad

Penelope Cruz in Ralph and Russo

Chrissy Metz in Tanya Taylor

Tony Shaloub
**Looking like your sexy older professor who you have an intense affair with and not even to get a good grade.

Sam Elliott and Katherine Ross
**People really shrink when they get older or was Katherine Ross always that much shorter than Sam??

Gemma Chan in Valentino
**The shorts doesn’t feel too casual because the overall look is upscale. A better outfit than her BAFTA tea clobber.

Her BAFTA Tea outfit

**I hope Gemma has time on her hands because Dominic Cooper is going to waste it.

Ezra doesn’t like that at all

Taraji P. Henson in Vera Wang

Thandie Newton in Michael Kors

Her BAFTA Tea outfit

**Thandie has navigated the film and modeling world since she was a teen and her daughter Nico is following in her footstep with a starring role in the upcoming live action “Dumbo”.

Nico’s father is director Ol Parker (Mamma Mia 2)

Janelle Monae in Chanel
**Interesting enough to keep it off the hated look. It’s both retro and futuristic.

Laura Dern in Valentino

Melissa McCarthy in Reem Acra
*Love the color and the style. Her best look in a while.

I also loved her BAFTA Tea outfit

Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton

Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein, Michael B. Jordan in Prada

Danai Gurira in Rodarte

Rachel Weisz in Celine

Lucas Hedges

Anne Hathaway in Elie Saab

Elisabeth Moss in Dior

Nicole Kidman in Michael Kors

Dominique Jackson (Pose)

Gina Rodriguez in Reem Acra

Glenn Close
*She looks like she’s wearing the bag that Crown Royale comes in.

Darcey Carden (The Good Place)
**It’s ill-fitting and the build makes it looks like it’s been balled up and unfolded in haste.

Connie Britton in Christian Siriano

Octavia Spencer in Christian Siriano
**Usually Spencer wears designs by her friend and it serves her well but I’m glad she changed it up but this dress isn’t necessarily it. I love the design but it’s a bit too frumpy looking.

The least important thing about any awards ceremony - The awards

BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman
Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody **WINNER

BEST MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Crazy Rich Asians
The Favourite
Vice
Mary Poppins Returns
Green Book **WINNER
**Just like “Bohemian Rhapsody” this is a controversial win for some people. Critics of “Bohemian Rhapsody” feels like the film shied away from Freddie’s homosexuality in order to play up his relationship with ex-girlfriend/ lifelong friend Mary and critics of “Green Book” thinks it’s a reverse Magical Negro story and feel that the filmmakers didn’t respect the family of Dr. Don Shirley (portrayed by Mahershala Ali) by getting their blessings for the film). Mahershala Ali called the family personally to apologize and conveyed had he known that Dr. Don Shirley had family he would have reached out.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns
Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade
Charlize Theron, Tully
Constance Wu, Crazy Rich Asians
Olivia Colman, The Favourite **WINNER

BEST ACTOR IN A MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Lin Manuel-Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns
Viggo Mortensen, Green Book
Robert Redford, The Old Man and the Gun
John C. Reilly, Stan & Ollie
Christian Bale, Vice **WINNER

**Bale moved to the U.S with his father when he was 18 and for some reason he sounds like a character out of “Oliver Twist” make that make sense!

He’s someone who I think hates press so he likes to exaggerate in interviews and I think he’s exaggerating that voice just like many people say Sofia Vergara is putting on her accent.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Amy Adams, Vice
Claire Foy, First Man
Emma Stone, The Favourite
Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk **WINNER

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Timothee Chalamet, Beautiful Boy

Peter Farrelly, Green Book
Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman
Adam McKay, Vice

And hosted a “Roma” screening this weekend.

BEST SCREENPLAY
Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk
Adam McKay, Vice
Alfonso Cuaron, Roma
Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara, The Favourite
Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga and Brian Currie, Green Book **WINNER

**Throughout the rest of the ceremony I was waiting for someone to come out and say that there had been a mistake. Not because “Green Book” wasn’t worthy but because the announcer clearly said Cuaron won earlier in the night for Best Screenplay. I’m curious how that ended up on his copy. And it’s not like he meant Cuaron won for Best Screenplay previously at the Golden Globes because he hasn’t. He’s been nominated for writing but didn’t win.

BEST ANIMATED MOTION PICTURE
Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
Mirai
Ralph Breaks the Internet

Killing Eve
Pose
Bodyguard
Homecoming
The Americans **WINNER

BEST TELEVISION SERIES - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Barry
The Good Place
Kidding
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
The Kominsky Method **WINNER

*I think the problem is that KIDDING while the superior show is a true blend of drama and comedy. It is too dark to be truly comedic but too absurdist to be a comedy.

Smart da'

Thanks to “Bodyguard” and this win Richard is known more than just “Game of Thrones” but that doesn’t mean he has forgotten about his time on the show. While his “Bodyguard” commitment kept him from participating in the reunion that was taped last year, he made time to see his former TV sister Maisie Williams’ play with Kit Harington.

BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL OR COMEDY SERIES
