The Emmys, What I've Seen

Sep 23, 2018 22:55

So the Emmys were last Monday night. The Emmys. On a Weekday. For some reason. And it’s companion awards show the Creative Emmys were held last Sunday.

While we are in the era of peak TV, the fine print is that the TV watching is done via streaming and cable as evidence that the winners of the Emmys went to streaming and cable versus the Big 5 (the exception? Ron Cephas Jones of NBC’s “This Is Us” Best Guest Star Emmy and Emmys for The Oscars).

So just who won Emmys?

Best Drama Series
Game of Thrones (WINNER)

Of course my dear hearts Gwendoline Christie and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau played the bickersons on IG

The Crown
The Handmaid’s Tale
Stranger Things
The Americans
This Is Us
Westworld

Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Matthew Rhys, The Americans (WINNER) **First win for the Welshie. I’m pretending that he won for his hosting duties on “The Wine Show” with pal Matthew Goode.

Jason Bateman, Ozark
Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us
Ed Harris, Westworld
Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us
Jeffrey Wright, Westworld

Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Claire Foy, The Crown (WINNER) **Foy was mixed up in the headlines about the wage disparity between she and Matt Smith during her time on “The Crown” and while she was never paid equal to him, she’s getting her revenge by venturing into film. She will be in October’s Oscar Bait “First Man” starring Ryan Gosling and she will play Lisabeth Salandar in the upcoming “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” sequel, “The Girl in the Spider’s Web”.

Keri Russell, The Americans
Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black
Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid's Tale
Sandra Oh, Killing Eve
Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones (WINNER) **I’ll never begrudge Dinklage of a win, but I don’t think this win is deserved. It’s not that S7 wasn’t his best work it’s just that there was nothing for him to do but stand around. Really odd that he won over Fiennes who did amazing work in “The Handmaid’s Tale”.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones
Joseph Fiennes, The Handmaid's Tale
David Harbour, Stranger Things
Mandy Patinkin, Homeland
Matt Smith, The Crown

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Thandie Newton, Westworld (WINNER) **Hmmmm. Hmmmmm. She had a great season, for sure but better than Strahovski? Better than Bledel? Nah. I think what is happening with “The Handmaid’s Tale” is that audiences are feeling beaten down by how depressing and horrific things are for the characters and they are rejecting it.

Alexis Bledel, The Handmaid's Tale
Millie Bobby Brown, Stranger Things
Ann Dowd, The Handmaid's Tale
Lena Headey, Game of Thrones
Vanessa Kirby, The Crown
Yvonne Strahovski, The Handmaid's Tale

Ted Danson, The Good Place
Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm
Donald Glover, Atlanta
William H. Macy, Shameless

Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Henry Winkler, Barry (WINNER) **Eons ago when Winkler executive produced the revival of “Hollywood Squares” I would see him all the time at where I work. The show didn’t even tape near my office -- but I think he just liked going to this chicken place named Koo Koo Roo and he would just be walking around, sitting by the fountain, wearing a blazer with patches on the elbows like a professor. /end random story.

Winkler ended his speech telling his adult children to go to bed. The reason? He wrote the speech when he was nominated for an Emmy for “Happy Days”.

The past and present collide. Ron Howard was on hand for the nomination of his series “Genius: Picasso”

Louie Anderson, Baskets
Alec Baldwin, Saturday Night Live
Tituss Burgess, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Brian Tyree Henry, Atlanta
Tony Shalhoub, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Kenan Thompson, Saturday Night Live

Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Alex Borstein, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (WINNER) ** I will never forget how MadTV’s Debra Wilson told me and a bunch of others how Borstein would cut up on set in order to get out of her contract. She acted like a terror and TPTB finally released her. Only, the gig she thought she had lined up didn’t pan out.

Zazie Beetz, Atlanta
Aidy Bryant, Saturday Night Live
Betty Gilpin, GLOW
Leslie Jones, Saturday Night Live

Michelle Dockery, Godless
Edie Falco, Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders
Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story: Cult

Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Television Movie
Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (WINNER)

The most important part of any awards show

Loved
Joey King in Zac Posen
**Gorgeous and my favorite look of the night. I love the color and the wrapped front adds flair to it. Maybe the hair could have been better, but the dress itself works.

Allison Janney
**I love it although it's a bit too Lola Falana. I hear the song Meryl Streep belts out in the beginning of “Death Becomes Her” when I see this.

Adina Porter

Issa Rae in Vera Wang
**Love the periwinkle (cornsilk?) and of course I lopants so this is a win.

Thandie Newton in Brandon Maxwell
**Former model so she knows how to dress. At the Star Wars premiere she went classy but fun with a dress with designs of all the black characters that have appeared in the films. But she knows when it's time for upscale how to do it without being dull.

Madeline Brewer in Brock Collection
**In theory I love it but it tips too far into Tim Burton muse territory. Maybe if the bodice wasn't lace or maybe if there was another color to break it up I'd love it more.

Mary Steenburgen
**Love it, Love it, Love it. The shoes are perfect, she wears it perfectly. It's very smart and while it seems too casual for the Emmys, I think it's a business glam look.

Alexis Bledel in Delpozo
**If only the pink gave way to pants, or maybe if the pink tulle was broader. I like it but there is something not all there with it.

The Queer Eye Guys: Jonathan Van Ness, Bobby Berk, Tan France, Antoni Porowski and Karamo Brown
**Jonathan, Antoni and Karamo gets all the points, moreso Karamo because if you're going to go over the top chic you do it like that. He reminds me of Armie Hammer's character in "Sorry to Bother You".

Mandy Moore in Rodarte
**Love the fishtail look, the color is gorgeous.

Dacre Montgomery
**After I got over my immediate reaction which was to punch his face, I realized I liked this look. If you're going to rock a Clark Gable 'stache, why not dress the part?

Angela Sarafyan in Christian Siriano
**She's just like her character in "Westworld"..she seems like a robot. A Lady Gaga looking robot.

Emilia Clarke in Christian Dior
**I think the bodice should be more sheer or maybe if the design ran across the breasts and the inner portion was see through.

Nathalie Emmanuel
**I love how sleek she looks.

Madelaine Petsch in Prada
**Very cute. I love the splash of mossy green.

Ryan Michelle Bathe in Melissa Masse
**Ryan is not just Sterling's wife and "This is Us" costar, but she's an actor in her own right. She has just been cast in the pilot of "The First Wives Club".

Tiffany Haddish in Prabal Gurung
**Beautiful and fun.

-Last week, Emmy winner for Best Guest Star in a Comedy (Atlanta), Kat Williams was on a radio show and he said that Tiffany Haddish wasn't that special, her schtick is basic and that there are so many other black female comics who deserve the success she's having. Katt took an opportunity backstage to make amends.

Hated
Michelle Dockery in Carolina Herrera
**I want to rip the floral applique off!! It is too big, it should be smaller, maybe as an accent at the waist not swallowing up the dress.

Samantha Bee
**Who let Krystal Carrington in the place?

Maya Rudolph in Simone Rocha
**No. It’s raunched in all the wrong places!

Tracee Ellis Ross in Valentino Haute
**As a person who loves Barbie -- she even reminds me of one of my Barbies--this is just too much.

Constance Wu in Jason Wu
**She looks like Venom breaking fee of his goo. It would have been great without the extra layer around the shoulder.

Michelle Wolff
**She must not have a stylist or the stylist hates her.

Amy Sedaris

The Others
Keri Russell in Zuhair Murad

Regina King in Christian Siriano
**A rare misstep for Regina. I don't like the structure of her dress and her hair isn't great.

Jessica Biel in Ralph & Russo

Laurie Metcalf

Chrissy Metz in John Paul Ataker
**I love how her eye shadow matches the dress --that's a very fun accent. Love the abuergine clutch and shows to contrast the green.

Leslie Jones in Christian Siriano
**For some reason I've been loving retro JoAnne Worley in Laugh-In outfits so I love this look just like I loved Awkwafina's ensemble in "Crazy Rich Asians"

Sarah Paulson in Oscar de la Renta
**The bodice is too low. Not a fan of feathers but would have loved it if there was colorblocking.

Sarah’s boo-thang, Holland Taylor

Yara Shahidi in Gucci
**She's serving Michelle Pheiffer in "Scarface" realness.

Kristen Bell in Solace London

Evan Rachel Wood in Joseph Altuzarra
**I want to say that the jacket is too long, but if it were shorter she'd look like a ringmaster or Dracula so I guess it works.

Aidy Bryant in Tanya Taylor and Kate McKinnon in Alexander Wang
**I really like it but I would love it if it was longer. It's too garden party vibe for the Emmys. I love her hair.

Scarlett Johansson in Dolce & Gabanna
**Okay, she likes funny men hence her marriage to Ryan Reynolds but at least he’s attractive. Colin Jost is annoying!

Judith Light

Louise Roe
**This Beetlejuice homage would terrorize Tim Burton himself.

Millie Bobby Brown in Calvin Klein

Yvonne Strahovski
**Looking radiant.

Ann Dowd

Emmy winner Samira Wiley

New parents Kristen Dunst and Meth Damon Jesse Plemons

Tina Fey in Elie Saab
**This dress was great minus the monstrosity of a belt.

Sandra Oh in Ralph & Russo
**I can take the hair, and I can take the general design style of the dress but it looks like it's velvet and it looks wrinkled.

Gwendoline Christie
**Love the colour (to all my GoT fans, she's wearing Lannister Gold!!) but again, it looks wrinkled.

Sarah Silverman in Galia Lahav
**I feel like she's worn eight versions of this dress.

The “Can’t Tell Us Nothing!” Brigade
Carol Kane

Tracey Ullman

Jenifer Lewis
**She had enough damn time to have a Nike dress made. She could've bought a Nike sportsdress off the rack and had someone add to it. C'mon now. She could have had a nice dress made with Nike : Just Do It or I Kneel With Cap anything but workout wear on the red carpet.

Alison Brie in Miu Miu
**Ill fitting and unflattering. It's as if she was to afraid to go Vegas Barfly and decided to go 60s Go-Go dancer.

Betty Gilpin in Vera Wang
**She fares fares better than her "Glow" costar Allison Brie in a cut out dress but her hair is drab. There is only so much you can do with a dress like that so if she wasn't going to go for a choker, she needed to go bigger with the hair or maybe a winding bracelet.

Glow’s Brittany Young

Megan Mullaly

Zazie Beetz

Pamela Adlon
**It looks like all these years later she finally got her wish to be a Pink Lady.

Suzanne Cryer
**The rockabilly look is nice---not for the Emmys---but nice.

Heidi Klum in Zac Posen
**Heidi (with boyfriend, Tokio Hotel guitarist, Tom Kaulitz) is ankling "Project Runway" along with Tim Gunn.

Letitia Wright in Pamella Roland
**This dress would be perfect if she was a 12 year old going to Easter service, but she is not.

Marsai Martin in Viktor & Rolf

Taraji P. Henson in Giambattista Valli
**When I first saw this it was at an odd angle so I couldn't get the entirety of the outfit but now looking at it how it's supposed to be taken in, I love it. Maybe the train should have been a different color in order to let the mini-dress work on its own.

Dakota Fanning in Christian Dior

Tatiana Maslany in Christian Siriano

Ellie Kemper in J. Mendel
**There was a joke last season on "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" about rich kids going into acting and they name checked Rooney and Kate Mara, Armie Hammer, Julia Louis Dreyfuss and I believe Nick Kroll. I thought the joke was that alone, but it was a meta joke because Ellie Kemper comes from a wealthy family of bankers.

Benedict Cucumbersquash and wife, Sophie
**He's looks like he's losing his hair. She looks immaculate. Great color, elegant, yet chic dress.

Tituss Burgess

Ricky Martin and fiancé Jwan

Marcus Schribner

John Mulaney

Joe Keery and Maika Monroe
**I hate his hair so much.

Mandy Patinkin and wife

LaKeith Stanfield
**An exception to the no white tux jackets rule because the jacket is textured, plus the lavender pin is a great touch.

But then again LaKeith is always a fashion maven

Brian Tyree Henry

Deon Cole
**Always stylish.

Peter MacKenzie leaning into his last name

David Harbour (with galpal “Fantastic Beasts” Alison Subol

The Men of “This Is Us”
Milo Ventimiglia in Bruno Cucinelli
**I think that men in white coats look like waiters, so Milo Ventipasta's suit is a "no' from me. But, I can't get over how gentlemanly Milo is. When Glenn Weiss's now fiancee made her way to the stage, Milo gallantly offered up a hand to assist.

Chris Sullivan
**Werk.

Lonnie Chavis

Jon Huertas (This Is Us)

Justin Hartley and Chrishell Strauss

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

Ed Harris and Amy Madigan
**I had no idea he knew how to smile!

Stephen Colbert and wife Evelyn

Jimmy O. Yang, (Silicon Valley)

Joseph Fiennes
**Looking like Ralph’s character in “The Grand Budapest Hotel”

O.T Fagbenle
**OT, Ruth Negga and Imogen Poots need to change their surnames.

Mario Lopez
**Mandals. Brown/Tan shoes with blue suits. Shorts on the red carpet. These are a few of my most hated things. I want to smack him with his boot. Armie Hammer and Michael Urie both attended red carpet events in shorts. We shouldn't normalize this behavior!! Only person who can get away with shorts at upscale events is Pharrell Williams.

Ryan Murphy

Phil Keoghan looking like a gigolo

Bin Bons!! Or Ben Barnes, if you’d rather

**Ben who has worked in the US mostly is now returning to the BBC after a decades-long absence with the 6part mini- “Gold Digger

The synopsis: Barnes plays Benjamin Golding, the thirty something copywriter with a shrouded past who becomes involved with an older woman Julia Day (Ormond). As the series progresses the impact their unconventional relationship has on her family is explored and the secrets of their past are revealed. Has Julia finally found the happiness she's always deserved? Or is Benjamin really the gold digger they think he is?

Jimmi Simpson

John Legend
**The EGOT winner himself.

Jason Bateman
**Either that’s just good lighting or Bateman is aging backwards.

Luke Evans

Noah Schnapp in Fendi
**Timothee Chalamet is somewhere salivating over this suit. If you're going to be a brand whore, own it, baby!

Trevor Noah
**Looking dapper. TBT the time Stephen Fry made a damn fool of himself over Trevor speaking Xhosa.

At the 33 second mark : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z-lkVYwu00

Patton Oswalt and wife Natty GanMeredith Salanger

The House With a Clock In Its Walls

Sixteen years after the grotestque "Cabin Fever" and thirteen years after the gruesome "Hostel" which prompted the phrase "torture p*rn", Eli Roth is here with...a kids film! And it's awesome!

Adapted from the novel of the same name by "Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke, "The House with a Clock in Its Walls" is a fun horror-comedy adventure akin to "Beetlejuice", but actually good (I didn't really like "Beetlejuice". I was only there for Winona Ryder).

10 year old orphan Lewis (Owen Vaccaro, "Daddy's Home"/"Daddy's Home 2") is sent to live with his uncle Jonathan (Jack Black), a stranger to him.

Almost immediately Lewis discerns that something is amiss due to the caginess of Jonathan and his neighbor/frenemy Florence (Cate Blanchett).

Soon Lewis discovers his instincts were true: Jonathan and Florence are mages who are trying to find the ticking clock hidden behind the walls of vast house (placed there by fellow Mage Isaac Izard, a still dashing Kyle McLachlan) - before the clock's final toll which would signal the end of the world as they know it.

The film was co-produced by Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg's shingle, and he gave Roth his blessing, calling it a quintessential Amblin film akin to early Amblin productions like "E.T", "Gremlins" and "The Goonies". I concur with Spielberg's seal of approval - it's fun, it's adventurous with a hint of danger : everything that was wonderful about being a kid.

Black and Blanchett are a great pairing, and Vaccaro is great Lewis who encompasses such great self-assurance, but also insecurity which I think most kid films don't have - it's either an overconfident kid, or a insecure kid who eventually finds courage.

Simply, it's just fun. The setting of 1955 lends a great charm to it, and unlike so many "purists" who scream about diversity in period films (like those who complained about Leslie Odom Jr. being in "The Murder on the Orient Express"), Roth and Co. have no such issues. This film feature Rene Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), as Isaacs wife, Vanessa Anne Williams as Rose Rita Pottinger and a range of background child actors of different ethnicities.

The film also stars Roth's soon-to-be ex wife Lorenza Izzo as Lewis' mother. Roth and Izzo announced their consciously uncoupling on Roth's Instagram in a way that only they would.
