San Diego Comic Con 2016...It Begins..Almost (Part 1)

Jul 09, 2016 08:20

It’s the that time of year that makes San Diego known for more than being the home of literal killer whales. Yes, Comic Con is revving up. While there will be plenty television and film offerings there are some glaring absences. FOX claims to not be attending due to piracy concerns (they whined over their SDCC teaser info being uploaded in the past) and Disney has pushed up their annual D23 which is their version of Comic Con. This earlier date will put it neck and neck to Comic Con so they are not taking their Marvel-owned wares there. While Warner Bros. Productions will have 21 shows present, there is no word on the movie side.

False alarm. Marvel will be teasing their films and WB has announced their 2 hour long panel.

*”Smallville” alums who will be present include Tyler Posey, wacky Uncle Zor-El Christopher Heyerdahl, papa!Teague Robert Picardo, Jason Teague the rotund Jensen Ackles, Lucy Lane Peyton List and Jeph Loeb.

Wednesday, July 20
6:00pm: Special Sneak Peek Pilot Screenings
Comic-Con and Warner Bros. Television proudly continue their annual Preview Night tradition, with exclusive world premiere screenings of the pilot episodes of five of the most highly anticipated series of the 2016-17 television season-Riverdale, Powerless, People of Earth, Frequency, and Time After Time-as well as a new episode of Teen Titans Go!

Riverdale

Things aren't always what you expect in Riverdale. Based on the iconic characters from Archie Comics and produced by Berlanti Productions (The Flash, Supergirl, Blindspot, Everwood), this one-hour drama is a bold, subversive take on the surreality of small-town life..

Powerless

It's a superhero's world. As the first comedy series set in the DC Universe, Powerless is the story of Emily (Vanessa Hudgens, High School Musical), a young insurance adjuster specializing in regular-people coverage against damage caused when superheroes and supervillains treat the city like their own personal battleground. Powerless premieres midseason on NBC.

People of Earth

From Emmy winners Conan O'Brien (Conan), and Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation), and creator David Jenkins comes People of Earth, a half-hour single-camera comedy series about a support group for alien abductees. People of Earth centers on skeptical journalist Ozzie Graham (Wyatt Cenac, The Daily Show), who investigates a support group to write about the members' supposed alien encounters. The more he digs into their oddball claims, however, the more he realizes a semblance of truth to their stories and possibly even signs that point to his own alien abduction. People of Earth is coming this fall to TBS.

Frequency

Based on the New Line feature film, Frequency is the story of a father and daughter who are supernaturally reunited two decades after his suspicious and untimely death. New York detective Raimy Sullivan was only 7 when her father, undercover cop Frank Sullivan, abandoned his family in pursuit of a case that led not only to his family's breakup, but also his eventual death undercover. But everything she knows changes when somehow Raimy and Frank connect, across two decades, over Frank's vintage ham radio in the garage. Frequency premieres Wednesdays at 9/8c this fall on The CW. Jeremy Carver (Supernatural), Toby Emmerich (Frequency film) are executive producers.

Time After Time

Using the 1979 novel and movie as a launching point, Time After Time chronicles the epic adventures of a young H. G. Wells. At the age of 28, the 19th-century scholar has yet to publish any of his landmark science fiction novels, but his idealistic thinking and radical ideas have led him to actually create a time machine. When his longtime friend, the charismatic (and secretly psychopathic) Dr. John Stevenson, a.k.a. Jack the Ripper, finds himself cornered by the authorities at Wells' London home, he escapes to present-day New York City using the time machine. Naturally, Wells follows, but instead of the Utopian society he imagined would be in the future, he finds a world more aligned to Stevenson's temperament. Fortunately, Wells meets up with Jane Walker, an assistant curator at a museum staging an exhibition on Wells. As Wells and Jane come together, they will not only play a dangerous endgame with Stevenson but also find themselves involved with the incredible characters and scenarios that inspired Wells'sWar of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and more. Time After Time premieres midseason on ABC. Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) and Marcos Siega (The Vampire Diaries) are executive producers.

*The picture is too distant but it stars annoying Daniel Grayson from “Revenge” Joshua Bowman and Samwell Tarly’s brother Freddie Stroma.

*Ever since I saw the sex scene between Corey Stoll and Andrew Rannells on “Girls” I have this fantasy of Eph (Stoll’s character on “The Strain”) having sex with Gus. PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN!!

The scene won't embed, darnit. But here's a link for research purposes. https://auscaps.me/2016/03/15/andrew-rannells-and-corey-stoll-shirtless-in-girls-6-04-old-loves/

3:30pm: Warcraft: The Road to Legion
A team of Blizzard Entertainment's veteran designers, writers, and artists talk about World of Warcraft: Legion, and the exciting content that will be leading up to its launch. The panelists include Alex Afrasiabi (creative director, World of Warcraft), Chris Robinson (senior art director, World of Warcraft), Matt Samia (senior creative director of brand marketing), and James Waugh (director of story & creative development).

*Last year at the Warcraft event “Warcraft” director Duncan Jones led fans in a chant which was used in the recently released film. While it wasn’t the success in the States that the studio hoped it would be it did terrific box office in China. Too wrapped up in the terrible dialogue and hammy acting of Travis Fimmel, I didn’t even think about Ruth Negga and Fimmel playing siblings.

But that just confused a few people who tweeted Duncan asking why he cast Negga and it didn’t make sense. He replied that it was because his sister is a different ethnicity than him. And instead of realizing their blinders were on, people doubled down telling him how he should define his sister.

4:30pm: MTV Teen Wolf
Executive producer Jeff Davis and the cast of Teen Wolf return to Comic-Con for the seventh consecutive year. The pack from MTV's hit series will dish on the upcoming season, answer fan questions, and share the first sneak peek of season 6.

*Series’ star Tyler Posey is now an executive producer on the show (hear that J2??). All indication is that it will be the last season for the original cast with the new castmates headed up by Dylan Sprayberry (“Man of Steel”) taking over the mantle. Despite Jeff Davis’ hints that it’s not the cast, Dylan O’Brien will be absent this season after a serious injury on the set of “The Maze Runner: The Death Cure”. Never a red carpet fixture O’Brien has been absent since his release from the hospital with only a distant picture taking in the hospital’s garage. His “Maze Runner” cast mates and his “Teen Wolf” dad Linden Ashby have said he’s recovering well but some conspiracy theorists think that his injuries are more serious than what’s been said and that his costars are just towing the company line.

“The Maze Runner” production is starting up again based on director’s Wes Ball’s twitter. No word on O’Brien.

Hopefully he’ll be up and about for the premiere of “Deepwater Horizon” starring Mark Wahlberg and Gina Rodriguez

Created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Captain America has been wielding his shield, donning red, white, and blue, and fighting the good fight for 75 years. Not only will you hear all about it as Seth and Evan lead a conversation, you can see the movie for yourself. Following the conversation, stay for the pre-party and screening at Horton Plaza.

Go behind the scenes with stars Rami Malek, Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin and season 2 newcomer Grace Gummer as they discuss the series' exciting second season. Mr. Robot follows Elliot, a cyber-security engineer who becomes involved in the underground hacker group fsociety, after being recruited by their mysterious leader. Season 2 explores the consequences of fsociety's 5/9 hack on multi-national company Evil Corp. as well as the illusion of control.

6:00pm: Comedy Central's Drunk History and Legends of Chamberlain Heights
Come learn about the history of Comedy Central's Drunk History! Derek Waters (co-creator/host/director) and other panelistss will walk you through how this liquored-up narration of American history works, with the help of an ever-changing cast of intoxicated actors and comedians. From humble beginnings as a digital series to three seasons on Comedy Central, with season 4 ready to premiere this fall, Derek and friends have plenty of stories to share from the making of the show. The party continues with a look at Comedy Central's newest animated series: Legends of Chamberlain Heights, premiering this September after South Park! The series mixes raucous comedy and social commentary, centering on three high school basketball benchwarmers: Jamal, Grover, and Milk. The three freshman friends tackle life with some wins and some losses, but failure doesn't faze them since they're legends, even if it's just in their own minds

6:30pm: Death and the High Cost of Resurrection
They call it a "Comic Book Death" when a major fictional character is killed off, but the audience doesn't believe they will stay dead. Does it damage stories when their heroes and villains refuse to remain in the grave? How emotionally invested can an audience be when big consequences are easily reversed? Bestselling horror/fantasy author Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire), comic creator and former Marvel/IDW editor Andy Schmidt, and others discuss the ramifications of resurrection with moderator Adron Buske (Nerd for a Living podcast).

*Interesting topic. Even the old standard of “no one stays dead except for Bucky, Jason Todd and Uncle Ben” doesn’t apply (except that Uncle Ben stays dead because of how his death motivated Spider-Man). I don’t mind characters being killed for a time and then resurrected because you get insight on how other characters felt about that character better when they’re dealing with the death.

7:00pm: Europe vs. USA: European and American Creators Meet
Graphic novel creators Roger (Spain), Mathieu Reynès (France), Gabriel Hernandez Walta (Spain/USA), and guests Jason Latour and Andrew C Robinson discuss and compare their work, experiences, and readership as seen from the two sides of the Atlantic. Moderated by Calvin Reid (Publishers Weekly).

8:00pm: Breaking Badder: Suicide Squad and the Dawn of the Heroic Villain
Unlike classic protagonists, contemporary leading roles are replete with flawed characters who favor their own agendas over society's rules. The success of properties such as Breaking Bad and House of Cards reflects our fascination with sociopathy. But do we really want to cheer for the bad guy? From Marvel's The Punisher to DC's Suicide Squad, the lines between hero, anti-hero, and villain are more blurred than ever before. Are these concepts obsolete? And how do these fictionalized depictions compare to how real-life criminals may actually view themselves? Mark E. Safarik, M.S., V.S.M (FBI Ret., supervisory special agent, Behavioral Analysis Unit) and forensic psychiatrists Praveen R. Kambam, M.D. and Vasilis K. Pozios, M.D. (Broadcast Thought) delve deep into the minds of fandom's most iconic villains. Attorney Jeff Trexler (The Beat, The Comics Journal) moderates.
