Whew, one more down and one more big one to go. As years past has shown whoever wins the BAFTA and Golden Globes wins the Oscars so prepare for a Leo, Brie, Revenant, Inarritu, Winslet, Rylance (possibly) win.
BEST FILM
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Carol
Spotlight
The Revenant (WINNER)
BEST ACTOR
Eddie Redmayne - The Danish Girl
Michael Fassbender - Steve Jobs
Matt Damon - The Martian
Bryan Cranston - Trumbo
Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant (WINNER)
*In his speech Leo thanked Tom Hardy citing his "fierce loyalty as a collaborator & a friend".
**Last week I went to see “The Danish Girl” again with a Q&A with Alicia Vikander and Eddie Redmayne. The Q&A was brief because they had a long day: the Oscar luncheon with group photo, press, then the Q&A and they dashed out to go to the Oscar nominees party. The moderator (Dave Karger of Fandango) mentioned it was their final Q&A for the awards season. Karger also mentioned that Redmayne is the reigning Oscar winner for Best Actor and Redmayne replied, “Not for long.” No illusions of a win over Leo with him.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Alicia Vikander - Ex Machina
Rooney Mara - Carol
Jennifer Jason Leigh - The Hateful Eight
Julie Walters - Brooklyn
Kate Winslet - Steve Jobs (WINNER)
**I don’t get it. I’ve seen every single one of these films and Winslet’s performance was the most uninspiring of them all. I can’t remember her doing anything of note besides saying nagging Jobs about seeing his daughter. I am just in shock.
FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
**Wouldn’t it just be easier to call it Non-English Language Film?

Cinematography
Bridge of Spies - Janusz Kaminski
Carol - Ed Lachman
Mad Max: Fury Road - John Seale
Sicario - Roger Deakins
The Revenant - Emmanuel Lubezki (WINNER)
*While I Lubezki deserved this hands down (it was just so beautifully shot), I’m disappointed that Danny Cohen, the cinematographer for “The Danish Girl” wasn’t nominated. Five slots and these are all worthy nominations but I would gladly trade out Kaminski for Cohen. The only reason why I wouldn’t take out Deakins is for the night-vision sequence in “Sicario”.
Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director or Producer in 2016
Alex Garland (Director) - Ex Machina
Debbie Tucker Green (Writer/Director) - Second Coming
Sean McAllister (Director/Producer), Elhum Shakerifar (Producer) - A Syrian Love Story
Stephen Fingleton (Writer/Director) - The Survivalist
Naji Abu Nowar (Writer/Director) Rupert Lloyd (Producer) - Theeb (WINNER)
**I think the only reason Garland didn’t snag this is because he was well rewarded at the British Independent Film Awards.
Costume Design
Brooklyn - Odile Dicks-Mireaux
Carol - Sandy Powell
Cinderella - Sandy Powell
The Danish Girl - Paco Delgado
Mad Max: Fury Road - Jenny Beavan - (WINNER)
**Now this is some BS! Delgado deserved this fully. I get that to create the look for MM:FM is more ambitious than just doing period costuming, but “The Danish Girl” and “Carol”s clothing was gorgeous.
Beavan flanked by Riz Ahmed and Olga Kurylenko who gave her the award
**Stephen Fry drew Twitter’s ire by saying that Beavan looked like a bag lady as she walked off-stage. He later tweeted that she is a long-time friend of his and she understands it was a joke.

**So thrilled for its recognition. A deeply moving film with wonderful performances.
EE RISING STAR
Bel Powley
Dakota Johnson
Brie Larson
Taron Egerton
John Boyega (WINNER)
**Very happy for Boyega, but really surprised because I didn’t think the UK was that enamored with “Star Wars” and voting could only be done in the UK. I thought Taron had it cinched because his “Billionaire Boys Clubs” costars Ansel Elgort and Suki Waterhouse urged their Twitter followers to vote for him and Egerton’s town in Wales plastered buildings with requests to vote for him.
Taron has slimmed down due to training in preparation for the shoot for “Kingsman: The Secret Service 2” which will commence in April.
Taron tweeted a picture of his “Kingsman” costars Edward Holcroft and Sofia Boutella with the caption “Reunited”
**Holcroft had already spilled the beans on his return but since Boutella’s character was killed in the first one either they’re just catching up or she is indeed in the sequel.
While Taron’s been burning it up on-screen
Will be next seen in “Eddie the Eagle”
**At the Sundance screening for the film.
Boutella’s been steady as well. She’s in the upcoming “Star Trek: Beyond” and in the “The Mummy” reboot starring Tom Cruise.
Congrats to the winners,
but to me the real winner of the night is Domhnall Gleeson who was in three of the films that won and he got the chance to present with Carrie Fisher.
**Some people ragged on how Alejandro G. Inarritu can’t pronounce Domhnall’s name but Domhnall gets it a lot.

But Carrie had her own bit of fun.
~As the Academy Awards have been embroiled in their own diversity issue the creative community in the UK protested outside the BAFTAs to shine a light on their diversity issue.
These actors are taking a bit more of a hardline approach by suggesting hiring quotas. I understand their feeling because right now it’s an honor system: the assumption is the best performer gets the role, but that’s a truly naïve approach because actors are the mercy of casting directors and other TPTB who elevate whiteness above all else. Recently Idris Elba gave a speech highlighting the need for diversity in the UK but it’s Thandie Newton and Lenny Henry have been speaking out about the need for better representation in the UK for years.
David Harewood of “Supergirl” spoke briefly about it in a recent interview with The Vulture.
