~The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced the nominees for the 86th annual Oscars. Ellen DeGeneres returns as the host for the second time.
There weren’t too many surprises to me with the nominations. The biggest surprise was that Tom Hanks struck out with both "Saving Mr. Banks” and “Captain Philips”. And “Saving Mr. Banks” which had Oscar bait-ish qualities about it didn’t even make it as a Best Picture nominees. Once again, the Best Picture category did not reach its maximum nominees of ten films. Something really didn’t sit well with the Academy with “Saving Mr. Banks” because perceived ace-in-the-hole Emma Thompson didn’t get a nomination.
Was it the hair?
(and THR reports that she was HAMMERED at the Golden Globes and at Sean Penn’s charity event for Haiti the night before)
Another surprise is that the script for “American Hustle” continues to get acclaim when it’s not very good. That entire riff about garbage perfume? Amateurish writing attempting to be profound.
Films that received awards on the critics side or through small festivals easily flamed out as the bigger ceremonies neared. Early frontrunners “The Butler” and “Fruitvale Station” and actors Greta Gerwig (“Frances Ha”), Michael B. Jordan and Oscar Isaac (“Inside Llewyn Davis”) were ignored. Jake Gyllenhaal who has always been featured in every awards discussion this season as if he had a chance with “Prisoners” was also nod-less.
Oprah, imma need you to take a few paces back
You too Zoe Saldana, Melissa Leo and Sarah Paulson
June Squibb move away from those losers Julianne Nicholson and Jennifer Garner
Dermot Mulrooney and Dane DeHaan, why are you even here?
Sirs, Oyelowo, Goodman, Rush, Farrell , et al, you’re making a scene. Move along and leave Mr. Abdi in peace
Pleasant surprises? Mads Mikkelsen’s “The Hunt” was nominated in the Best Foreign film category and the documentary “20 Feet from Stardom” about of backup singers Merry Clayton (she had a track on the “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack. The soundtrack that my sister persisted on playing despite my pleas to ..you know…not play that garbage.), Tata Vega (who was the singing voice for the character Shug in “The Color Purple”) and girl group great Darlene Love and others.
Pharrell Williams who served as the music consultant alongside Hans Zimmer for the 84th annual Oscars was nominated for Best Original Song for “Happy” on the soundtrack for “Despicable Me 2”. Sadly, Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” didn’t garner a nomination for its (perfect) use in “The Great Gatsby”. Spike Jonze also received a Best Original Song nomination for “Moon Song”, the track he penned with the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’s lead singer Karen O.
Karen O also was the music consultant for Jonze’s film “Where the Wild Things Are”.

*Philomena:
Based on a true story from an article written by British journalist Martin Sixsmith who meets Philomena Lee, a woman who had kept a painful secret from her family for fifty years. She was a teenage mother who was sent to a convent where her child was put up for adoption by the nuns. Memories and thoughts of her son plague her so she and Sixsmith set out to find her son. The quest shines a light on the Irish Catholic church and the way they separated mothers from their children as moral punishment.
Martin Sixsmith and Philomena Lee
For a deep, dark subject the film has a lighter touch. Co-written by Jeff Pope and film’s lead actor Steve Coogan, the movie couples Martin’s (Coogan) cynicism and distrust of the church with Philomena’s (Dame Judi Dench) wide-eyed wonder that belies her bigger viewpoint. It’s as much as a road-trip to find Philomena’s son as it is a quest for Martin to learn how to accept people who have a brighter world view than he does.
Dench with Lee
The film was directed by Stephen Frears (“My Beautiful Laundrette”. “The Queen”) and he did a Q&A for the film with a brief appearance by Philomena Lee. They did it backwards where they held the Q&A first then showed the film. There were people in the audience who had already seen it so Frears tried to not spoil the film.
There was a woman in the audience who said that she was raised in the orphanage where Philomena’s son was (not at the same time). He was shocked. He asked her what name the nuns gave her and she was given the name Pauline. He nodded like it was the right answer. I guess it was sufficiently Catholic enough to pass muster.
I really liked Frears. He’s like Stephen Fry. He downplays his acclaim and views himself as a journaeyman, a director for hire. He says he’s hired because he brings films in on budget (something he credits his work for the BBC with). He does not view himself as an auteur and he believes in hiring good people and letting them do their jobs. They showed a montage of his films and they showed a clip from the John Cusack film “High Fidelity” where Jack Black dances wildly. He says Black improvised that himself. He just let the camera roll.
An audience member asked him if the film was shot in Ireland or North Ireland. He cagily asked, “Why do you ask?” He finally admitted it was North Ireland masquerading as Ireland. As he explained to the room, North Ireland is under UK rule and they give the tax credits so he shot there. But he shot on the border so that he was as close to Ireland as you can get. He was worried the man asking the question caught a mistake.
The Nut Job:
The animated film that if given a XXX title would not have to change its original name. How do you make a children’s film that isn’t warm, funny or interesting? Ask writers Lorne Cameron, Peter Lepenoitis (who also directed the film) and Daniel Woo.
Will Arnett voices Surly, a squirrel just trying to get a nut (see, XXX!). A renegade to the rules of the park and its leader Raccoon (Liam Neeson) and selfish to a fault, Surly sets his eye on a nut store. The park which is undergoing a food shortage also sets their eye on the store. Raccoon sends out the parks two bravest squirrels Andie (Katherine Heigl) and Grayson (Brendan Fraser, giving his Dudley Do Right all) to secure food. Andie and Surly fight over the store oblivious that the nut store is a front as the tenants plan a bank robbery.
The animation is good. The film is set in the fifties so it reminds me of the Looney Toons shorts with the cops and robbers. That is the only good thing I can say about this film. Arnett uses his sarcastic Gob stylings in this film and I don’t that’s appealing to kids. He’s too edgy for a kids’ film.
This friendship doesn’t even register
~About Time:
I refused to see Richard Curtis’ other films “Four Weddings and a Funeral” , “Notting Hill” or “Love Actually”. I loved “The Boat That Rocked” (US title “Pirate Radio”) and I loved “About Time” so I may have to revisit his other work.
It was marketed as a romantic comedy which is why I didn’t see it in its theatrical release. I’m so glad I was bored and wanted something to watch that I was ready to deal with it being a rom-com. It’s not a rom-com. The movie is called “About Time” but it could easily be called “About Love” or “About Life”. It’s as much as tale about romantic love as it is about family love. It’s a movie about trying to live in the present.
Tim (Domhnall Gleeson-pronounced Donal, weirdly enough) finds out on his 21st birthday that the men in his family can travel back in time. The men can only go to situations they have experienced “no going back in time to kill Hitler”, Tim’s dad James (my senior citizen crush Bill Nighy) explained.
With this ability in his hand Tim decides to use it to find love. Tim meets Mary (Rachel McAdams) and uses his ability to woo her. What follows is what follows all of us: moments that scare us, moments that make us happy or provides great sadness. The film quickly becomes a story about not just finding love but finding joy with what is given you.
~Fruitvale Station
I dragged my feet on seeing this for a really long time. I still have family and friends in Oakland so I heard about the Oscar Grant killing and everything leading up to the trial. I watched the film with a sense of impending doom.
Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, “Fruitvale Station” shows the final 24 hours of Oscar Grant’s life, man who was shot and killed by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit, the Bay’s subway station system) police officer while handcuffed. The movie vividly recreates the experience because it the shooting was actually caught on video by passengers of the BART train and those standing on the platform.
Grant (portrayed solidly by Michael B. Jordan) was a young man who had bumps in his life but was working on being a better boyfriend to his girlfriend and mother of his daughter Sophina (Melonie Diaz) and trying ton lessen his mother’s worry (Octavia Spencer).
It’s a day and a life that shows how we never know what awaits us at the next turn. Grant and Sophina were out celebrating New Years Eve and the next Grant is dead at the hand of an overzealous BART cop (played by Chad Michael Murray-the role he was meant to play) who claims to have mistook his firearm for pepper spray and fired on Grant.
Kevin Durand as a fellow officer
The film doesn’t hide that Grant had a criminal background but it shows that even if he did have one, the fact of the matter was that on that night, in that moment, he was just a man on his way home. Because of that officer’s own perception he decided to treat Grant and others with extreme heavyhandness. What they also don’t show in the film is that Oakland was so sure the officer wouldn’t get a fair trial they relocated the trial to L.A where the officer was found guilty of manslaughter where he was sentenced to two years and served one and some months.
~The Legend of Hercules:
Don’t waste your money. Not even if you think Kellan Lutz has a ripping body. Because he may be built like a Mack truck but his face is …let’s say on a scale of Stripes from “Gremlins” to Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kellan is John Hawkes (who opened the door for me a few weeks ago at work. I was stunned. I babbled as I thanked him).
Directed by Renny Harlin who has been low key since his heyday with actioners like “Die Hard 2” and “The Long Kiss Goodnight” and my personal fave “Deep Blue Sea”. Samuel L. Jackson vs. intelligent sharks can’t be anything but stellar.
Kellan Lutz stars as the titular Hercules as the film follows his shirtless and half-dressed adventures, all the while remaining dreadfully boring with CGI that would make the Sci-Fi channel execs offer up some cash to help the production out. He even has a Loki-esque brother,
a lover
Okay, she’s his lover. Not “Spartacus” 2.0 Liam McIntyre
And all the bad acting that will make you Henry Cavill in “Man of Steel”.
You are as dull as flat water chasing down a cucumber sandwich but your pecs! Want to motorboat them.
~Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
Reboots, not only for comic book franchises but literary figures who adults care about…somewhat. Following in the steps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, Chris Pine is Jack Ryan, but not the self-assured agent from “A Clear and Present Danger”. No, this Ryan is fresh out of London Economics and the military. After an injury ends his career as a Marine, he is recruited by Harper (Kevin Costner) into his covert anti-terrorism squad. Ryan is tasked with tracking financials to ensure terrorist groups aren’t getting funding to launch another terrorist attack. His work brings him to Russia to suss out businessman Viktor Cherevin
(Kenneth Branagh, who also directed).
New to the spy game Jack is having a hard time dealing with the danger of the job and the secret from his girlfriend Cathy (Kiera Knightly). As the stakes grow higher Jack has to use his wits and training in order to stop what he is sure to be another attack on the U.S.
Boilerplate film. I’ve not seen the previous Jack Ryan films so I’d be interested in seeing how young!Jack Ryan compares to those incarnations or if this is supposed to be a completely new take on it. I’ve actually seen “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” and I wondered if upon second viewing if I would still find the film dry. I do. Chris Pine who was so incredible in “Smokin’ Aces” lacks charm (apparently Michael Shannon had the role initially but was fired after yelling at a costumer. Allegedly.) Those crystal blues can only take audiences so far. Standard fare. Not as exciting as a “Star Trek” film though.
Appopros of nothing dirty minded Gemini Zachary Quinto.
It was the premiere
Only actors I saw were Alex Kingston (“E.R” and “Arrow”), Derek Theler (that hot a** from ABC Family’s “Baby Daddy” who strutted around like the former model he is), Jonathan Tucker (“The Deep End”, “The Black Donnellys”) . I met Tucker a few years back at the premiere of a Paul Haggis film and took a picture with him. Now I have a better camera and debated asking for a new picture but he was with his wife and that was a sore point because at one time in life I wanted to be Mrs. Jonathan Tucker so….awkward.
And this dude.
Alexander Dreymon, “American Horror Story: Coven”
I saw him not too long after I entered the theater and I wasn’t sure if it was him because of the glasses and I didn’t know his name. He was chilling at the concession stand and I fumbled for my phone so that I could look up his name. By the time I could do it (I’m a smartphone newbie) he was gone. I thought I missed out and at this point I was still unconvinced it was him.
Left the theater saw Papa Pine (Robert Pine of “ChiPs” Chris’ dad. All around good guy and actually more handsome than his son) and headed out to the courtyard and there Alexander was. I go to him and said, “Excuse me, is your name Alexander?” And he said, “Yes.”
Me: Alexander Dreymon?
Alexander: (laughs)Yes. (curious) How do you know me?
Me: American Horror Story. I hated that your arc ended.
Alexander: Thank you.
Me: I wasn’t sure if it was you. The glasses. That Clark Kent thing is real. It changes your face.
I asked him for a picture.
This is him asking me if I want to take a picture with him
I asked him if he’s working on a project. He says she’s shooting a movie now but it’s a longer process with films so it won’t be out for a long time. As we were talking a guy pops over and asks him “Are you a movie star?” And he responded, “I’m an actor.” And not with a pompous conceit but with genuine modesty.
I thank him for the pics and we shook hands and that was it. And it was my first time inside the Grauman’s TLC since they made it an IMAX theater. They took out several front row seats, arranged the remaining ones in a semi-circle and added stairs to what was before a slight incline aisle. I tried to go back to the lobby to see if I could see Kevin Costner (he’s a Jonathan Kent) but after on trip I gave up on walking up and down all those stairs for Bull Durham.
~On the 19th the tickets for the Paley Center for Media’s annual Paley Fest goes on sale. As usual the ticketing is staggered. Corporate members get first dibs, then general members and then the public sale is on the 19th. The Paley Fest has a new home this year. They’ve moved from the Saban Theatre to the Dolby Theatre, home of the Oscars. This is a much bigger venue than before and I honestly don’t know how they’re going to fill it. Which is why I’m playing Russian Roulette. I won’t buy tickets when they go on sale. I will wait until it gets closer to see if the tickets are put on discount. The past two years I’ve bought tickets as soon as they went on sale and the past two years those tickets become deeply discounted closer to the date. If they couldn’t fill the 1,807 seats in the Saban, they sure in hell can’t fill the 3,041 seater Dolby. I say this now but watch it be my luck they sell out (as I doubt they plan on using all 3k seats.
Who will the Paley Center for Media honor this year?
Thursday, March 13th Veronica Mars Reunion
*The Kickstarter partially funded “Veronica Mars” film will debut at Sundance.
I think what Rob Thomas and Co. should do is if they have remaining incentives they have to give to fans who donated, they should convert the incentive to passes to the Paley Fest if those fans want it. I think fans would rather be in the room with the cast.

~Another event that will be here before you know it is Comic Con. Preliminary information has been released. The latest how-are-we-going-to-fcuk-crowds-over news is that you could no longer by a four day pass. If people are planning to come from out of town/country they’re either going to have to wait on booking travel or just move on faith. Now you can only buy a single day pass. But the big ticket days are Friday and Saturday. What if someone booked their flight but only manages to get Sunday tickets? Who is going to fly to San Diego for children/Supernatural day (cos those are seriously really the only two things that go on Sunday)?
Also there is a price increase: $3 increase Thursay through Saturday and a $6 increase for Sunday.
Bits and Bobs
~The Television Critics Association (TCA) is still ongoing and what’s coming out of if is that TV is going to seem a bit less crowded. It was announced that “Justified” will end after this season
Goodbye teenage!Rylan Givens
HBO has cancelled “Newsroom”, “Glee” will be set in New York during its upcoming last season,“True Blood”s final season has already been announced, CW cancelled something called “Breaking Pointe” and Mark Pedowitz of the CW says SPN can stay on the air as long as they want and if the ratings keep up.
I was hoping “Smallville” would be the last WB show to go ten seasons but I guess that’s not going to happen. And I’ll even keep my mouth shut and won’t bring up that time Jensen suggested that SV had overstayed its welcome in its 7th year and that all the people were gone with the exception of Tom and Allison. What is this for SPN? Season 9? Where’s SPN’s creator Eric Kripke? Or Sera Gamble? Or Ben Edlund? How many times have Sam and Dean died? How many times have people jumped into their bodies? I swear Sam has almost had as many men in his body as Dean has. And that’s saying something.
Yeah, I’m not going to say anything.
No. Not at all. I’d rather address the elephant in the room
Not talking about you this time, Jensen
