The Rite, SV Push Back, Sundance Pics..

~In my non-spoiler review of “The Rite” I will try to refrain from witticisms like “There’s nothing right about “The Rite” or “The “Rite” has it all wrong”.

It was the premiere. While I didn’t get to see Sir Anthony Hopkins up close, when he made it to his seat, people stood so they could get a look at him. Suddenly it turned into a standing ovation. I have never seen that before at a premiere. At Q&As it’s standard to give a standing O to the person doing the panel. But at premieres? Never. Especially when it’s a situation of an actor just standing by his seat signing autographs. He waved to the room then motioned for everyone to sit down.

I did get a chance to talk to the second lead, Colin O’Donoghue

He looks way better in the film

*His friend asked if I wanted to take a picture with him and I am now learning how to say yes and be done with the back and forth. These two women were talking to him for a long time as I waited and his friend kept urging me to just sidle up next to Colin I guess so the women could take the hint because they were not leaving his side. But I waited. Saw Connie Britten (who hasn’t met a premiere she hasn’t liked and Anthony LaPaglia.)

The film is based on true events (while I watched one of the costars, Alice Braga sign autographs, a woman next to me asked another if she had liked the film. The woman responded that she had and the questioner said, “It’s about my brother.” She was the sister of Father Gary Thomas, whose Colin’s character Michael Kovak, is a composite of.) of a young man who, determined not to go into the family mortuary business led by his father (Rutger Hauer), goes to Seminary school. Primed to take his final vows, he wants to leave the order due to his lack of faith. Seeing the promise in Michael, he is sent to Vatican City to train under an unorthodoxed priest who specializes in exorcisms, Father Lucas Trevant (Anthony Hopkins). Michael’s faith and skepticism over possession is tested by Trevant’s tactics and encounters with those he helps.

The trailer makes the film seem as if it’s another “Exorcist”. It’s more in line with “The Last Exorcism”. It’s more about a man with a crisis of faith, which doesn’t sound as attractive so they must play up the other side of the film: whether possession is real.

Hopkins is great- he makes everything so Shakespearean (even though it’s getting a bit gimmicky). O’Donoghue who held his own against Hopkins in some of the more dramatic scenes, gave a performance where his skepticism was telegraphed across the scene. Every line he read, every look he gave was threatening to turn into an eyeroll.

It was directed really well by Mikael Håfström, who set up these scenes of portent as well as utilizing Rome as a backdrop.
It’s an interesting movie, but if you’re looking for fright, you won’t find it in this one. My thinking is because they had the input of the real priests (there were a bunch of nuns and priests at the premiere. A woman pointed one out to her husband as if she had just seen a unicorn.) they weren’t keen on over-embellishing on the details. They had to have a sort of restraint.

*Here’s Colin’s interview with the NY Post

~If you’re hearing screams of rage and guttural moans of agony it is the sound of “Smallville” and “Supernatural” fans distress over the CW’s last minute decision to push back both shows returns by a week.
