DC, SV, SPN and Oscar Nods...

Jan 22, 2009 14:07

~If I were a betting woman I’d be broke because just yesterday me and this guy were talking about the possible noms and he guaranteed that Eastwood would be nominated in the Best Actor category and I agreed with him. I was sure since Clint has won for acting, they’d give it to him out of sentimentality. I guess they don’t care that much about Clint as an actor to give him a nod. They’re just jellus!

My one real disappointment is the lack of nomination of “The Dark Knight” in the Best Film category and Christopher Nolan for Best Director. After LotR, I thought fantasy films would have a better chance, but barring that I thought voters would look beyond “comic book film” and look at what Nolan presented. Men dressed as bats and clown seem fantastical, but at its barest element it’s a drama.

I call “The Dark Knight” a masterpiece and my friends roll their eyes because they think I say it as a fan of DC characters, but the scope of the film was majestic. It was the perfect blend of practical and computer special effects-and the SFX looked flawless compared to what I’ve seen of “Benjamin Button”. The shots were divine. The very last scene of the film with Gordon explaining to his son about why Batman is doing what he’s doing (I write vaguely for those who haven’t seen it) and those long shots of him riding through the tunnel?? EPIC! Just masterful filmmaking and it sucks that for whatever reason they are ignoring Nolan. The film was nominated in the categories of Editing and Cinematography., Art Direction, Make Up, Sound Editing, Special Effects and of course Best Supporting Actor so there was some recognition given.

Best Motion Picture of the Year
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

Richard Jenkins for The Visitor
Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn for Milk
Brad Pitt for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler **I think it’s down to Rourke or Pitt

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Anne Hathaway for Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie for Changeling
Melissa Leo for Frozen River
Meryl Streep for Doubt
Kate Winslet for The Reader **Kate or Melissa. Kate because her time is now or Melissa because she’s the dark horse. And she was on “The Young Riders” and who doesn’t respect that?

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role

Josh Brolin for Milk
Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt
Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight **Tough. Either Ledger for sentimental reasons, but out of the seven posthumous Oscars noms, only one has won. RDJ would be a remarkable win, but Hoffman is the safe bet.
Michael Shannon for Revolutionary Road

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role

Amy Adams for Doubt
Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis for Doubt
Taraji P. Henson for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei for The Wrestler

Best Achievement in Directing

Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire** I haven’t seen it, but I know Boyle’s work. But I have a soft spot for Van Sant’s loving direction of Milk.
Stephen Daldry for The Reader
David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon
Gus Van Sant for Milk

Reaction
“It feels surreal. I just got a call from Javier Bardem in Spain and he was flipping out and screaming. The reality is I got up at 5:55 here in Utah and looked at the clock and figured the nominations were announced and it didn’t happen. I said to myself, ‘That’s OK I can deal with it.’ Then I realized there’s a one-hour time difference.”
Josh Brolin, supporting actor, “Milk”

“It’s delightfully surprising. I had no expectations. A very close friend called me as I had no idea it was televised. It’s remarkable how many people are calling me. What does all of this mean? Four letters: W-O-R-K.”
Melissa Leo, actress, “Frozen River”

“I didn’t sleep all night. I screamed in my husband’s ear and drank some champagne. When you’re acknowledged like this, you feel confident that you’ve reached people and you’re on the right path. That’s a basic need of any human being, expecially when you’re living out a dream like I am.”
Viola Davis, supporting actress, “Doubt”

“My virginity is lost. It was painless and pleasure was involved. With musicians and film people it’s like cows grazing in the field and the grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence. So in some ways it’s a more exciting adventure being in the film world than in my own back yard. We’re just about to do a short tour in South America, so it’s not the most convenient time. So on the one hand my little voice was saying ‘it’ll be a relief (not to get it).’ On the other hand my reaction was “F-ing great!”
Peter Gabriel, song, “Down to Earth” from “Wall-E”

“Oh my God, it’s really unreal. I started crying when I heard Gus’s name mentioned, which is way before they get to screenplay. That’s when it really started to hit. By the end when I saw eight nominations, it was just the overwhelming excitement that Harvey Milk’s message is going to get out to small towns that haven’t yet gotten the film. I just started to weep. It’s just the best day.”
Dustin Lance Black, original screenplay, “Milk”

“The best thing is that it was my best friend from New York who called and told me. She was so happy, she was crying and I’m like, ‘What has happened?’ I didn’t think it was something horrible, and then she told me. The beauty of the whole thing is that it wasn’t my publicist who called.”
Marisa Tomei, supporting actress, “The Wrestler”

“I was at a midnight screening last night here at Sundance and was up until 3 a.m. I was sound asleep and then a little shell-shocked when the calls started coming in. For me, it raises the bar and expecations, but that’s exciting. I’ve been an actor for almost 20 years and started as low as you can on the totem pole. It’s kind of mind-blowing. I’m looking forward to what it may bring in the future.”
Michael Shannon, supporting actor, “Revolutionary Road”

Clark is confused because why doesn’t Lex understand the last thing he wants is for Lex to go straight. How can they date if Lex is straight?!

The course of true loves never runs smooth, Clark. Keep trying.

Clark and Bruce just can’t seem to get past the flirtation stage and down to business

Although they have plenty of opportunities

Both are waiting for the other to make the first move

It’s easier for Bruce as Batman to encroach on Superman’s crotch territory

But Bruce seems also drawn to Aquaman too

But if Bruce won’t take the bait, Superman has to find release for his kinks elsewhere. For all of Metropolis to see apparently

Does Jonathon know how pervy his son is?

Artwork for New Krypton. Is there going to be Little Krypton in Metropolis?

Notice the panel featuring the Black Krypton. Yes, there was a Black section of Krypton

This is from Batman R.I.P and while there’s a great chance that Bruce Wayne will not be really dead, doesn’t he look pretty dead? It looks kinda hard to come back from this kind of damage. Poor Superman.

Hands off Supes, the kid is mine

Maybe the Joker was looking at Robin too closely

There’s a perfectly good and not at all molester-y explanation for all of this

Really

Holy Clingy Twink Boyfriend, Batman!

Uh…Okay, no there’s not.

They have a complex relationship

Bruce always have to fight for what's his: Batman: The Battle for the Twink

At least Superman and Batman aren’t the only one on the down low

Only Bruce Wayne would use Batman’s mask as a sex toy. It won’t work, dude, the mouth is too wide.

Doomsday and Darkseid preparing to hand Superman’s ass to him. Thanks miss_tress
