Okay so reading Reviving Ophelia which is essentially about how Western culture is killing the authentic selves of adolecent girls... and this paragraph just blew my mind....
"Adolescent girls discover that it is impossible to be both feminine and adult. Psychologist I.K. Broverman's now classic study documents this impossiblility. Male and female participants in the study checked off adjectives desribing the characteristics of healthy men, healthy women and healthy adults. The results showed that while people describe healthy men and heathy adults as having the same qualities, they describe healthy women as having quite different qualities than healthy adults. For example, healthy women were described as passive, dependant and illogical, while healthy adults were active, independent and logical. In fact, it was impossible to score as both a healthy adult and a healthy woman." ~Mary Pipher Ph.D.

gah. I hope this book offers a plan and some small solutions (though common sense type things are already coming to mind) that can help the girl kiddos I work with deal with the crap they face as they're on the brink. *sigh* I can only immagine what they'll have to deal with.
and it's awful late for someone to be driving home... I think I'll call to make sure they're okay. *sigh*
