CANON POINT: post KHII Epilogue - Blank Points
AGE: 16
APPEARANCE:
"You could say I am... the biggest nobody of them all." PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: -
PERSONALITY: Since childhood Riku has always been curious about the worlds outside his own; he wants to explore them, to grow stronger as he travels and most importantly he doesn't want all of this just for his own sake: even at young age he already feels that somewhere out there he can find the strength he needs to protect his friends. This is what defines a large part of his actions: the will to do anything and everything to make sure that the people he cares about are safe and content - no matter the means and the costs. If Riku considers someone a friend, he will go to hell and back to help and protect them.
His absolute loyalty and protectiveness of those he cares about are two of his key traits and his most favorable attributes. As mentioned before, he doesn't really care what that will cost him and/or to an extend un- or semirelated parties. For example, when DiZ orders him to find and bring Roxas to Sora Riku doesn't hesitate to leave and later when he finds himself losing the battle against Roxas, he throws himself back into the darkness without a second thought, at cost of his physical appearance.
Before leaving home Riku has always been the strongest one on the Islands, fiercely competitive and eager to prove himself. Due this he certainly developed an arrogant streak along with fierce pride - both would cause him quite a bit of trouble when he first started exploring the worlds. Even before he had inherited the Keyblade from Terra, he dreamed about leaving the islands behind to see the worlds beyond his own. Over the years that curiosity turned into obsession - he felt trapped and restless and began to regard the Islands as nothing but a cage - which in return was the first sign of 'darkness' within him and ultimately triggered the events of KH I.
Riku was always used to the attention of others (first and foremost Sora's) lingering on him and seeking him out for leadership and advice. Maleficent ends up using that need in order to spark jealousy in his heart and guides him to start relying on the darkness. Despite that, Riku's original intention - to protect his friends - still remains true; though at that point Riku is willing to justify absolutely any means as long as the outcome is satisfactory. He feels little to no remorse about kidnapping Pinocchio and using him in order to find out more about Kairi's condition and is taken aback when Sora calls him on it, even angry that his supposed best friend isn't willing to see his side of things.
This rage would fester and poison their bond to the point of indifference and almost even hate (on Riku’s part at least), and that - along with the despair over being unable to help Kairi - would drive Riku further and further into the darkness, until Ansem, Seeker of Darkness became able to posses him, using the weakness he showed the moment he first started to crave strength out of selfishness instead of his desire to help and protect others.
However, Riku has grown wiser since. After awakening in Castle Oblivion, he first swears to be done with the darkness, though the matter was made difficult; Ansem, despite being defeated by Sora, still threatened to take over his heart. His presence and meddling of several members of the Organization XIII complicated things even more, since the basement group decided to manipulate Riku into fighting Sora, who was taking on the other half of the Castle Oblivion team in the upper floors of the castle.
With the help of King Mickey, with whom he formed a close bond in that time, Riku was more or less able to hold his own against Ansem and the darkness until his fight with Zexion, in which he came to realize several important things (with help of Nanimè): First of all, the past was the past and despite how much he wanted to go back and change it all, he had to live with it. And not just live with it, but accept it and learn from the consequences. Second, he is his own person, responsible for his own actions and the consequences that follow and he had to bear them. And thirdly he realizes that the darkness did not automatically equal evil, it was rather the intent it was used for that categorized it as such.
Later when Naminè offers to put him to sleep and seal away Ansem and the darkness in his heart along with his memory of both, Riku refuses, thinking that he would rather face with the consequences of his prior actions and be able to protect Sora from the Organization as he slept, than go to sleep himself and run away from all of it. He faces off with Ansem one more time before leaving Castle Oblivion, deciding that even though the darkness wasn't evil by itself, he wasn't about to shun the light - no matter what others would tell him about choosing one of the paths, light or dark, he would make his own way and go the middle road, the 'road to dawn'.
Riku often comes across as very serious and mature, even more so after his insights at Castle Oblivion. He is very thoughtful and kind to the people he thinks deserve it (and especially girls). When Xion asks him what she should do after finding out that her memories are not her own but Sora’s, he advices her to chose for herself but to take care that she chooses what is ‘right for everyone’. After that he makes sure to give her the time and keep her away from outside influences (namely DiZ and the Organization) that might sway her from coming to her own conclusion.
In his time working for DiZ, he has become quite good at keeping himself hidden to observe and act out of the shadows - skills that would later help him in aiding Sora in KH II. Still he refuses to actually show himself, an effort to protect his friend from seeing what had become of him. Because, despite defeating Ansem, the Heartless himself and his abilities still remained within his heart, leading him to rely greatly on just the darkness despite his resolve not to. Sometimes between CoM and 358/2 Days this grows so bad that Riku is forced to wear a blindfold in order to keep his original appearance. He seems to feel ashamed of that fact, and even muses about 'being the biggest Nobody of all' ('the one, who shouldn't exist' in the Japanese version) in front of Xion. He also feels guilty over his actions during the first game, despite having them accepted as his past.
Due the guilt and shame Riku refuses to return to the Islands and/or be with his friends - he feels unworthy of being with them (despite the fact that he very much wants to return to them and to his home) and thinks that the Darkness is his own problem to deal with, nothing he wants to burden others with. This is the one piece of pride he has still kept for himself - his actions, his consequences and if anyone should deal with that, it’s him and no one else.
However after reuniting with Sora and Kairi in the World that Never Was and later finding time to talk reconcile with Sora in the Dark Meridian, he has started to forgive himself and decides to return to the realm of light with him when the door to the light appears.
ABILITIES: Riku is a Keyblade bearer, chosen to inherit the power by Terra, able to use any Keyblade of light and darkness and their magic. When he left the Islands those powers were still dormant, until Malificent enabled him to use the darkness. The Keyblade itself is a mysterious weapon. As the name indicates it is a a large key-like sword that can deal an astounding amount of damage despite having no actual cutting edge. It's main power is to seal and/or unseal any kind of lock or barrier and can release or lock away the heart of a person.
Despite being a Keyblade from the Realm of Light, Riku's
Way to the Dawn reflects on his nature of being part light, part darkness and like almost all KH weapons, it is handily stored in hammerspace and can be summoned by Riku at any time.
While fighting his way through the basement of Castle Oblivion Riku developed the ability to 'smell' the darkness (and consequentially the light) around him; this sense seems to be quite longranged as Riku was able to tell that Marluxia had been defeated, even though there was a distance of several floors between them. Birth by Sleep revealed that this ability was once common place for Keyblade Wielders and had an empathic quality that allows one to sense the source emotion behind a person's light/darkness. Since Riku is mostly untrained and still coming into his powers; I'd like to keep it open for him to eventually develop that empathic edge of that particular power.
In order to be stay unharmed while traveling through the Corridors of Darkness and to obscure his identity from Organisation XIII after the incident at Castle Oblivion, Riku was given a magical Black Coat by DiZ; the same one that is worn by the Organization. The cloak protects its owner from the darkness and automatically generates black trousers, boots and gloves to go with it.
Although generally a rather weak at magic, Riku is able to use three powerful spells:
Dark Shield: a shield spell that creates a powerful hexagonal barrier.
Dark Firaga: A strong spell that creats dark fires, which latch onto their target and follow it over a longer range.
Cure Potion: A healing spell, which cures the whole party.
Other than that his attacks are mostly physical and while his chosen weapon is the sword, he can also hold his own in pure hand-to-hand combat. He has the basic set of KH-abilities which includes but isn't limited to: Dodge Roll, High Jump, Auto Dodge, Air Slide, Aireal Recovery, Block and Auto Block.
In battle Riku as extremly fast and agile; his style is very similar to Vanitas' - one-handed and agressive. His attacks often involve lunges and jumps, he is able to use the Corridors of Darkness to teleport close to his opponent and can create strong shockwaves just by slamming his weapon into the ground.
In 358/2 Days Riku has a powerful limit ability called Darkstorm: when pushed into a corner, he is able to use it to increase his speed and infuse his weapon with light energy (it's similar to Sora's Sonic blade-ability and Terra's and Aqua's Bladecharge command style). In KH II he shares a Limit Break with Sora called Eternal Session in which the two of them combine their powers of Light and Darkness in a series of attack combos.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:
"C'mon, Sora, you around here somewhere? I thought you said 'We'll go together'?" "Seriously, who- or whatever left this really needs to work on their sense of humor." THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE: Being back home, back to the Islands - the one place Riku had longed to returned to so much, but hadn't thought he'd ever see again - is almost surreal; even though they'd been back for a week already.
There are so many things he had found himself thinking about in the two years he'd been gone, so many little things he had missed, things like the feel of the warm sea breeze brushing over his skin or that of standing bare footed in the sand or the sound of the waves; unchanging, no matter how much time passes and now the idea that he had ever considered this place a prison seemed almost foreign.
This was home. This was where he belonged.
Because even though the islands were a small world, they could never be too small. They were part of something much, much larger after all.
It had taken him until now to be able to return to the Secret Place, to where it all had started. Where he had started it to be precise. He took his time, admirign the art work from so long ago, a hand tracing over one of the scetches he vaguly remembers scrapping into the rock around the age of six and a small smirk along with a slight ache in his heart hitting him when he sees the picture of Sora and Kairi sharing the paopu.
But that was not what he had come for.
Finally he found himself standing in front of the door, the one mystery he had spent over nine years wondering about, and shimmering just beyond it he could make out the Keyhole.
It was sealed now, he knew; he could sense the faint smell of the king's light... Mickey must have closed it when he had waited for them with Kairi and his men.
He just had needed to see it for himself one more time; for some sorts of closure he supposed.
The journey was over now, and with it all the pain, the longing for home and for his friends, but not the guilt - that still lingered with him, always would he supposed. But that was okay; he didn't want to forget his mistakes, they had shaped him after all.
The time for rest had come; time for all of them to be normal again, to be 'kids', even if everything that was supposed to be familiar still seemed a little foreign and he had changed so much that he knew things weren't quite like they had been before he had left the islands, couldn't ever be like that again.
But that was okay too, he thought when he heard Sora's voice calling for him from somewhere outside. Things weren't really quite like they had been. In some ways... they were now even better.
