The Monstrumologist

Rick Yancey

Will Henry is a half starved orphan, ward to a man rumored to be crazy...a manic-depressive doctor who specializes in hunting monsters.  Will's father served the doctor, devoted to the alleged "great man", and to do anything less would be to question his father's judgment.  But the doctor forgets to feed him, wakes him at all hours of the night, and drags him out on terrible missions. In this, the first volume of the series, they confront a repulsive swarm of man-eating creatures, with eyes on their shoulders, giant shark-like mouths in their torsos, and terrible appetites. While fighting to stay alive, Will secretly agonizes if the doctor is really so great, or if his mistakes are costing people their lives, including those of his parents.

Very well written and delightful historical setting, this gruesome horror story is downright nauseating at times.  Should satisfy any teen reader with a hankering for nightmarish stories and disgusting scenes.  Due to bodies being ripped apart and devoured, maggots, infections and other nasty business probably best for high school and up.
