Emiko Superstar Mariko Tamako
Emiko never had any issues with being a geek. She had a nice, quiet crowd of friends to hang with. But when they all decided to become miniature business people and take off for the summer to study finance, she decides it is time to find her own path. Forced to take on a babysitting job for her neighbors by her mother, she finds it to be a means to sudden freedom...and inspiration. While spending some of her hard earned cash a the mall, she witnesses a wild dreadlocked girl doing a crazy loud dance, throwing flyers everywhere. One flyers lands in Emiko's hands, and suddenly everything changes. Emiko lies to her parents about going out to movies, to sneak down to the warehouse district so she can check out the Freak Show. Here she finds kids her age (and a bit older) doing unpredictable amazing things...inventing themselves in all sorts of ways. At first she is too shy to even go in, but gradulally she becomes entranced and decides she, too, wants to be a freak superstar.
Delightful, offbeat read about a teen girl finding her own strengths in her own way. Breaks my heart that DC is putting Minx down!
