Side Effects

Amy Goldman Koss

When Izzy finds out she has cancer, she is a bit freaked, but is determined to carry on and just try to live as normally as possible under the circumstances, and most of all, to survive.  But kids at school start acting all weird and she can't even count on her best friend to not freak out on her.  She begins to count on her new friends at the childrens hospital where she gets her treatments to help her figure out how to deal with the cards she's been dealt, but it is her great sense of humor that keeps both her and the reader afloat.

Finally, a happy survival story about cancer for tweens and teens.  I really enjoyed this book, particularly since it helped me better understand what my brother had gone through, and just how sweet life is to him now.  Highly recommended for 5th grade and up, and for anyone who has had cancer touch their lives or that of a loved one.

family, friendship, survival, cancer, humor
