The Shamer's Daughter
Lene Kaaberbol

Dina is a young girl living in a very small village, who used to have at least one friend.  But now no one will look Dina in the eye.  Dina has inherited her mother's gift...that if anyone looks her in the eye, she will see and show them their own shame.  Seen as an essential part of society, the Shamer's are revered and tolerated, but also feared.  This leaves poor Dina terribly frustrated, as she misses the companionship she once had in other people.  Things change when her mother is called away to assist in an investigation in the big city.  She doesn't return, and a man comes to fetch Dina, weaving them both into a dark plot involving murder, betrayal, and fallen royalty.

The Shamer's Daughter is an easily accessable fantasy that will draw readers in quickly, and will leave them anxious to read more in the series.  Excellent for tweens and up.
