I've just watched Before Sunrise. It's mindblowing.
Movies touch me, in general. Not exactly sure why, but I think I'm maybe more open to a movie experience than other forms of artistic expression. But this was truly exceptional. It's like the last scene of Jackie Brown, which always gets to me no matter how many times I see it. Only that one scene is the entire movie here. And it's better. And it's so devious and evil in its honesty that seeks to subvert your carefully developed, painstakingly shaped and polished rational everyday mentality. It succeeds, too.
For those who have no idea what it is, it's a simple movie. Most likely filmed using just one camera. Two actors. Vienna. That's it. Boy from the States meets a French girl on a train from Budapest. She's heading to Paris, he's taking a flight to US. They get off the train in Vienna and have until morning to be together. They talk. One hour and forty minutes later it ends and you have strong introspective urges coupled with that blasted feeling in your chest that lets you know you really, really want to sigh. You aren't going to sigh because everything goes downhill from there and you know where that particular road ends. But you want to. Only I'm not talking about you, I'm talking about me.
Gods damnit.
