So sleepy today--took a doze after Demelza left for school, so that I could get up and go to yoga. Which I did, but flagging now. I haven't written one word on my Big Bang story, and I've been at the computer for two hours. The time waster of Farmville and procrastinating reading friends' posts.
Been two whole weeks since I left for Bistocon and seems like it was only yesterday. Such a fun time in Romulus, Michigan! Felt like a group of friends hanging out together playing raunchy games and watching British buddy-buddy agents.
I get to do it with my Starsky and Hutch friends, all over again, in 6 weeks! SHarecon is coming soon. What's great is about six to ten of the people who were at Bistocon will also be at SHarecon.
I've said this before, and I will surely say it again, if there is any way you can get to ANY con, anywhere, try. (save your pennies, starting now.) There is nothing better than getting together with fannish people and bonding over the guys we share. Many people do not know that there are lots of small cons--for various different TV series or movies. Multi-media cons are fun, too, and can be found almost every month in some state or country. Fan run cons (different than huge cons like Comicon or the old Creation cons) are frequently less than 300 people, more often (like Bistocon) quite intimate. Ask around! I know of Connexions (back east, Maryland?), Revelcon (March? Houston, Texas), Escapade (Feb or March, LA area, near LAX), Dragoncon (not at all sure where or when)--just to name a few. Stick your toe in.
Yeah, the first time is scary. Hopefully, you can bring a friend, or know someone who's already there, but go! I went cross the entire country to my first SHarecon in 2004, mourning a baby who had died in our hospital two days earlier, so not sure I was in the right spirit. Plus (and I know none of you who know me believe this, but basically, I am quite shy)--but I went. When I arrived, having actually only met one person in RL before, I found friends. Flamingo hugged me the moment we met! I put that sweet baby into my memory and went forward. Here it is 12 years later and I'm gearing up for another SHarecon!
But I have to get through the next six weeks first. (October is going to be fun, but busy, too. Family reunion sort of thing happening literally a few days before I leave for SHarecon)
Sunday, had what was described by the charge nurse as a "stable-y unstable" baby--very sick, but not really anything emergency or frantic to do. Paired with a quiet little feeder-grower. Fantastic, peaceful assignment for my first day back from vacation.
Thus, I was quite unprepared for Monday when I came back to my "primary" baby. (a baby we choose to follow through their course in our ICN.) He's a micro-preemie (less than 1000 grams) who was majorly unstable. I am generally an easy going person, able to roll with the punches. But less than an hour after the shift started, I was calling the medical staff--repeatedly. The baby was in need of a whole different approach to his care but none of the higher-ups agreed with me. (the other nurses and the respiratory therapist were on my side.) By the end of the night, I felt like I'd had 8 hours of banging my head against a brick wall and was more frustrated than I'd been in a decade or two. The break-relief nurse basically had to care for my other baby, I was so busy, and luckily, that baby's parents arrived to feed their child.
Fast forward to last night and a whole different shift. While I was off on Tuesday, medical staff saw the light and changed a number things about little M's care. Totally better, totally calm--both for myself, and for M. Yay. Isn't it the small things (or in this case, actually fairly major things) that make life better?
Grateful for my family, friends, my abode, my cats, EDD--my car, and that crazy place I work in.
Reading LOTS of Pros fic 'cause I got several zines at Bistocon, plus a magnificent Lewis fic by Suzan Lovett (Another Thing to Fall on AO3) Glancing now and then at the book I abandoned before the con: Crimson Petal and White. Soon, Sugar (the main character), soon.
Watching: Still having lots of fun with New Tricks (season 8 now), Masters of Sex (although S2 ep 6 was sadder than sad) and Death in Paradise. Have seen 6 of 8 eps of Stranger Things (sweet Eleven, and I adore Dustin) plus a friend just recced Crossing Lines, so I may check that out tonight.
Going to take a nap now. (although, must finish picking the vegetables and making pies on Farmville)
