I'm leaving for a job interview in about 5 minutes. It's a long-term subbing position for a 2nd grade class in Evansville, about 25 minutes south of home. I don't know that I actually want the job, but I applied for it the day after I had an initial interview over the phone with Frederick County, where the principal told me I did a great job with the questions, but I might want to look into getting more subbing experience.
Last night, I went to the newly renamed Merit library, my former happy fun time CIMC at the school of education, and ran into my student teaching supervisor. She thought I had moved out of state, based on all of the recommendations I've been tossing her way, but I told her I was not and that I'm working at After School for now and lining up interviews for next year. She scoffed at the notion that subbing would be better experience than After School. "It's not real teaching," she said. "Well, I mean, it's real teaching, but it's not the same as having your own classroom."
This caused me a lot of thought-- my kids at After School have real rapport with me, and I have to work on managing them, coming up with things for them to do and developing a relationship with principals, parents and teachers at the school. I guess I don't really care if I get this job. I'd probably take it, because the experience wouldn't be bad, and it would be traditionally good, but I won't be disappointed at all if I don't get it. This makes interviewing much easier.
I've got one out of town in April and one, a real one, in May. I met an HR lady at the job fair and she invited me out in May, when principals will know how many openings they have and which grades and which schools. I have a pretty good feeling about that. I'll be doing a lot of flying in the next few months, and the next six months or so will be crazy, with the trips, the possiblity of new jobs, getting married and maybe moving.
It'll keep me busy for sure.
