As I'm digesting the headlines of today, I thought this quote was pretty appropriate to consider:
"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." --Martin Luther King, Jr.
I am also recalling earlier, relevant
journal entries.
edit: I apologize for unwittingly subjecting you all to a false quote that was apparently being spread like wildfire around the internet. I usually avoid such bandwagons, but I really felt the sentiment (as, I'm sure, everyone else who posted it had). In any case, here is the original quote (we hope):
"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. ... The chain reaction of evil-hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars-must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation." -Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love
Actually, this isn't really a quote for yesterday. It is a hard decision I make everyday-- to not hate.
