Well, directly telling them I am an artist and I wanted to take pictures/draw resulted in "No" as a response. I haven't gotten caught in the act, however, so I keep it up. I think I'm just becoming increasingly paranoid that I will be "found out" at a good spot and/or frustrated by the fact that I need to be careful about it.
Admittedly, I don't know your situation or the exact needs you have for these photos... but one thing that might be worth considering is using a camera phone. The cons of that would be the quality is probably not nearly as good... and if you don't have your own camera phone, you'd need to bring a friend along... But the pro is it's much more subtle. It's hard to tell the difference between checking text messages and taking a pic through a camera phone.
If using a regular digital camera is the only feasible option, it still might help to have a posse. First, you'll have the emotional support. Second, they can give you good cover while you're shooting. It's almost like you have to turn it into a game, really. :}

I've considered the camera phone thing before. I don't have one. Although I'm sure the quality wouldn't be top notch, it might be nice just to get overall shots of layout, etc. Hmm, I should check out how much one of those might set me back...
I do take people shopping with me when I want to get pics sometimes. I usually have them casually talking to me/shopping while blocking the view/aisle from people. What really gets me though are those black domes up above. Who knows when a camera is pointed at you and someone is paying attention? Paranoia alla 1984.
Thanks for the offer! My concern is if I go that route I may need the camera/phone at odd times, etc. I'm on the fence as to if I should just cave and get one at this point.
Camera phones are getting cheaper all the time. In fact, it's quite likely that you can get a 3M pixel camera in a cell-phone for a very small outlay. Or, if you want a zero outlay, (assuming you already have a cell-phone and very few people don't these days), just take your existing phone into your local service provider shop and ask for a free upgrade. They'll make you sign a new 12-month contract is all...
What you ought to do is post the original photo along side the photo of the painting, as a point of reference. That would be interesting.
Here's another option. If caught, just tell them you were doing it for a dare, it was a stupid student prank, you're really sorry and it won't happen again, honest, Your Honour!
I'm on a family plan, so I'll have to see if there is something I can do about getting a deal on a new phone.

lol ;) I'm not sure if I'd be convincing. I was never one for caving to peer pressure. I try to look sweet and innocent as much as possible, though.
I don't know how it is over there, but on this side of "the pond" mobile phone companies offer all contract customers a fee upgrade to certain models every year.
This has several advantages for the phone company. 1) They get rid of all their old stock. 2) They get people to upgrade to new phones with new features. 90% of people who have a camera phone have, at some stage, sent a photomessage. The point is, if you have it you want to try it and when you try it you end up paying for it...
I've worked for the largest mobile phone network provider in the world.
I was never one for caving to peer pressure.Aye, but they don't know that! Just looking innocent and saying "I'm sorry, I didn't realise you didn't allow it", should get you off the hook
