Determination

The fox hybrid chuckled heartily and ruffled the shorter boy's white hair energetically. "Don't worry, little one! We'll get you your furry of a brother back in no time!"

Allen smacked his large hand away with the offended look of a fine British gentleman. "He's not my brother!" he roared in outrage with a glare.

Lavi blinked mock-confusedly. "Oh?" his green eye glinted with amusement. "What is he, then?"

Allen paused. "He's..."

A friend? Lavi wondered. Something like a friend? Something like a distant cousin with furry ears and a tail? A rival? A rival-friend? What?

"He's Kanda. He's a bastard!" Allen declared solemnly.

That... that was surprising. And this time, Lavi's confusion was not fake. He scrutinized the white-haired human's expression, trying to understand the meanings behind the words.

This strange-looking human, that looked so soft but was actually incredibly tough, this human that was so young and little was moving mountains to get some poor less-than-human living toy back, his amazing silver eyes glaring up at Lavi as if daring the redhead to refute what he'd said.

Just try it, those eyes said. And you'll break before I do.

Lavi searched those eyes for answers, knowing he couldn't break that wall of determination and see what he wanted to know, but trying anyway. The question that had been hanging in the air between them was on his lips, ready to spill out if only he'd let it. Why was this kid doing all this?

His eyes and his will were unwavering, his father was always two steps behind him as a steady support, his friends were all around him, and his-

Oh.

That desperate way he was looking for the hybrid. The absolute violence with which the human forced his way forwards. The recklessness, the sacrifices.

It felt like a puzzle piece was satisfactorily sliding into place in the fox's head. So that's how it is. Allen, you-

Lavi smirked.

It was kind of cute. And also extremely amusing.

Oh, but Lavi couldn't wait to meet this fellow.

"Aaaah, I see." He said knowingly, and allowed his amusement to curve his lips into a grin so wide it almost reached his ears. Which, by the way, he was trying to keep under control so they wouldn't give away just how much more amused than he was letting on he was. "Weeell, we'll get him back fo sure. 'Cause if we don't, I know ya're gonna kick our asses and then go fetch 'im yerself."

Allen had looked mildly disturbed at the knowing gleam in Lavi's eye, but those last words made him smirk.

"Damn right I will."
