AMC--Chapter Twenty-Seven

Dec 06, 2005 14:42

I'm going to try to keep this short, for once.

I'm going to rate the chapter for general audiences, although there are some mild mentions of sexuality.

Comments and criticisms are always welcome.

Thank you for reading!

And this, boys and girls, is why people take classes in and get advanced degrees in pedagogy and music education. Macalaurë sounds to me like he needs to get his butt off to that conservatory in Alqualondë or wherever it is real quick. For all his imaginings about playing duets with Findekano, he is very much a soloist by training. But it seems like he wants to become an ensemble player, and he's got to go off and learn the skills for that. It might also be good for him to be around people who love music the way he does. It's no wonder he's so depressed and out of it all the time. He and his family are on completely different wavelengths, and they don't really seem interested in exploring his aural world the way they expect him to explore their visual and physical one.

Points to Fëanor, he's at least making the effort to connect, though there's probably a large enough rift between them that they won't ever be fully easy with each other.

So Nelyo's getting ready to pop the question, is he? Given what we know of his later life, the outcome of this is going to be spectacular.

I think you've got Macalaurë's voice pretty well for the most part, although I thought that the beginning part of his conversation with Fëanor in the final scene came off sounding a little bit like a Valley Girl. It seems as though you haven't yet found the core of this character in the same way you've found, oh, Nelyo, but it's fun watching you peel back the layers.

He does, somewhere near the end of the story. Then you're welcome to tear apart my music education bit (which will be somewhat improved with the information you've already given me) because I'm sure it's going to be....

We'll just leave it as a surprise, actually!

I hope so. It's kind of my own non-canon subplot. I'm incredibly amazed that no one has complained about the sheer volume of non-canon subplots in this story....

*waits for tomatoes*

Eek! Will have to work on that! I don't think that dialogue is one of my strong suits.

Macalaure was the last character to speak to me of the Feanorians. Actually, I initially gave him a chapter only because everyone else had one, and so it seemed unfair not to include him too. In the end, though, I really enjoyed writing him.

*raises hand* I LOVE the non-canon subplots! It gives the story a warmth and a kind of personal touch that just telling the "known" events would lack. It makes the characters deeper and more believable, and besides, the subplots are *interesting* and *cool* :D :D

Behold, Eni hath spoken! ;p

Eh, don't worry about the subplots. It's not like the Sil is full of more gaps and lacunae than Swiss cheese, in addition to the non-existent characterization, right? It's just deeds with names attached. It practically begs for non-canon subplots. Which is why I, at least, like to write Sil stories.

I've been thinking about Macalaurë a little, and I've come to a decision. If I were Macalaurë's primary instructor/advisor at the Conservatoire Alqualondë. . .

. . . the first thing I would do would be to put the boy in a large orchestra. Later on, when he got the hang of playing in a large group, I'd move him to smaller chamber ensembles. In fact, I'd focus on ensemble playing for much of his first year there.

. . . I would also put him straight into a dance class, social dance for preference. He has very low self-esteem, and I think that comes from not being naturally athletic in a family of smiths and athletes. But he clearly has a good sense of rhythm, if he's able to play for dance parties, and he seems to understand things if he can relate them to music. I don't think he's as much of a klutz as he thinks he is. I'll bet that, with an understanding teacher, he'll discover that he can dance. And that will do wonders for his self-image and for his self-confidence.

Me too. With LotR, I feel like I can't hold a candle to the original work, so why try? Keeping with this, the little bit of LotR that I do pertains to characters who don't get a lot of attention, like Elladan and Elrohir, the Rivendell Elves, the Lothlorien Elves (other than the main players in those areas, of course).

Awww....

Seriously, I love your input about Macalaure's music education. You know enough about my music background to know that I haven't had a lot of education, so this is most helpful. Many, many thanks!
