Yeah, in either MR or Peoples of ME (I always get them mixed up), Tolkien says that people were surprised that Feanor married Nerdanel because she was not very beautiful.

He, of course, thinks she is, and that--to me--is all that matters.

Or, in Dawn's version, they ran off and "married" with no one's knowledge or consent and then lived happily ever after.
