Thanksgiving Snowstorm (First Significant Snowfall of the Season)

Nov 26, 2014 17:04

I can't exactly say "winter" since it is still autumn for almost a month yet. I dithered when deciding where to put the picture of the snow in my files: chronologically correct (the Autumn 2014 folder) or where I'd be more likely to find it (the Winter 2014-2015 folder). I went with Winter 2014-2015, which is also where I put the pictures of the ( Read more... )

My sympathies. Of course, we're experiencing the same weather system in the Boston area. Slushy and a bit slick now, changing over to rain for a while, then back to snow late tonight. The forecast is for minimal snow here (maybe an inch or so), but more further inland. I just returned from ferrying Mr. P to the Honda dealership on Comm Ave to pick up his Fit (in need of a minor repair). What a wretched drive. So I fixed myself a generous Vesper martini when I got home.

It started as a cold rain this morning but was All Snow by mid-morning. The temperature hovered just above freezing, though, so it was a wet mess on the roads. I just hope it doesn't get cold enough tonight for that mess to freeze.

We're in for the night. Bobby has started a fire in the woodstove, and we're doing Thanksgiving prep now so that, later, we can settle in for a couple episodes of Vikings and some spiked eggnog. ;)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you! :D The roads should be clear tomorrow. After last winter, I feel like we are practiced at this! I almost feel like a Northerner! :D

Gorgeous!

Nothing but rain here! I hope that the rain holds. There has been snow predicted for this evening, but it does not look like anything is going to change much. I have my fingers crossed.

I hope it worked out for you. We had a sudden sharp temperature drop that ushered in the change from rain to snow. I woke up at 2 AM the night before, and it was raining and 45F. By the time I woke up for work, it was down to 41F (still raining) and dropped three degrees in the next hour.

I'd rather have the snow, but of course, I don't live in the city! I can see why rain would be better for you.

It was both! :) My inlaws called last night after taking their foster daughter to her mother's for the holiday, and they said the roads were awful.

Wow, what an amount of snow! I'm glad you made it home safely.

Get 'em nice and hyper and then send them home. >:^)
*ggg*

I'm fascinated that the season is considered autumn over at you until mid-December or so, if I got that right. We're having a much milder climate in comparison (though snow in November is not unheard-of), but still December is considered to be firmly winter. Now I'm wondering who exactly decides that...

It depends on how one divides up the seasons. Culturally, winter starts this weekend, after Thanksgiving in the U.S. Meteorological winter begins on December 1. Astronomical winter begins on Winter Solstice (Dec. 21).

People around here tend to use the calendar/astronomical definition, while knowing that we could get winter weather. However, in our area, snow is actually rather uncommon in November and December. We might get a light snowfall in mid-December but a significant snowfall in November? Doesn't usually happen. Most of December is cold rain; January and February are the months when we expect snow.

Here we have a division: meteorological as of 1st december, astronomical 22nd of december. Here is the data for Germany

I confess I never realised seasons are also attributed astronomically, I only new the distinction between cultural and meterological seasons, like Dawn also said.
